Rollin Williams Obituary

Salem - Rollin C. Williams, 90, of Salem, passed away Monday, Sept, 24, 2012, at New London Rehab and Care in Waterford, after a short illness.

He was born on March 19, 1922, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of the late Ruby and Rollin Williams. He was raised in Tulsa, Okla. He graduated valedictorian of his class and performed as a solo violinist in the school orchestra.

Rollin graduated from Howard University in Washington D.C. and went onto earn his master's at Boston University in social work. Rollin served from 1943 to 1946 in the U.S. Army. After working as a medical and psychiatric social worker for the V.A. in Springfield, Mass. and Northport, N.Y., he became the first psychiatric supervisor at Norwich State Hospital.

Rollin was the first African-American professor hired at The University of Connecticut. He retired after 30 years. Rollin was a member of the board of directors for Dime Bank and a contributor to the Early Music Society. Rollin was an accomplished musician and greatly enjoyed opera. He had a great sense of humor, was very cultured, and was a compliment to any setting.

He will be deeply missed by his good friends, Bill, Susie and Tim Lesick of East Lyme; and his cherished friends, Kent and Arthur of New York.

A Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 181 Ocean Ave., New London. A visiting hour will be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

I had the honor of meeting Rollin well over 40 years ago. He had the most wonderful sense of humor and personality. He was always a joy to talk to and he always had a way of making a bad day a good one with his ever-so positive outlook on life. He was a wonderful man, the world truly has lost a treasure. Rest in peace my friend.
