PATEL, Dr. Hawa
August 1923 - December 2016
Hawa passed away, peacefully, on December 8, 2016 at Vancouver General Hospital. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Hawa was the first non-white woman to graduate from the University of Cape Town's Medical School. She worked in South Africa, England, Iraq, and in Canada, at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, and as a Consultant at Vancouver Children's Hospital. She is survived by her sister, Ayesha Patel, Toronto; brother-in-law Dr. Howard Burton, Vancouver; sister-in-law Marie Christiane Patel, St. John, New Brunswick; and sister-in- law Dr. Shamima Patel, London, England; and many nieces and nephews in Canada, Ireland, England, and South Africa. Predeceased by her brothers Dr. Moosa Patel, Dr. Suleiman Patel, Ahmed Patel, Ismail Patel, and Dr. Yusuf Patel; and sisters Fatima, Mariam, Gadija, Juleikha and Dr. Hajira Burton. After a funeral service at the Richmond mosque on December 10, burial took place at the White Rock Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Dr. K Barbour, the nurses and staff in the Neuro Science Ward, 5b, for the compassionate care they gave Hawa. You all made her passing very comfortable and so peaceful. A donation to VGH in Hawa's memory will be greatly appreciated.
