HEATLEY, Gerald Ernest Gerry died on February 27, 2007 at Saanich Peninsula Hospital after a short illness. He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Dorothy; sons Douglas, (his children Tara and Nick) and Gordon. He also leaves his brother Ronald in Ottawa. Gerry was born in England on December 21, 1925 and came to Canada as a child with his parents Ernest and Edna. After the war, he joined the Naval Reserve and later the RCN as recruiting officer. He also founded the HMCS Carleton band and led it as Bandmaster for several years. Gerry eventually left the Navy to become the public relations officer for the Ottawa Citizen and after that spent most of his career in public relations for the Federal Government finally reaching the level of director in Industry, Trade and Commerce. I worked for Gerry as a Trade Publicity Officer in the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce. He was a great boss and fun to work with. I missed having an occasional chat with him after he moved to the Coast; I regret we will not have a last chance to have a good laugh together. All my condolences to the family

Dear Dorothy and family:
I was sorry to read of Gerald's passing in this morning's Ottawa Citizen. He was a kind man and always a wonderful host.
I wish you peace and tranquility as you honour his life.

I knew Gerry at The Ottawa Citizen when I was city editor and later worked with him at State Visit in 67. Later I went into the government and knew Gerry then. Last time I saw him was in Victoria. He was a wonderful friend.
