Martha Gayle Dennis
Wichita Falls - The years of Martha's life pilgrimage were 78. Martha Gayle Dennis was born on her dad's brother's farm, Clyde and Falba Good, northeast of Iowa Park, Texas, August 21, 1942 to Raymond and Minnie Good (Head).
Martha's mother, Minnie, was born in Paul's Valley, OK April 18, 1904, and died October 20, 1975 in Iowa Park, Texas. She had 4 brothers: Odie (chiropractor), Craig (oil field pumper), Dick (ran liquor store in Electra), Bruce (oil field worker) and 3 sisters: Veda (nurse who opened perhaps the first nursing home in Texas in Comfort, TX), Falba (married Raymond's brother Clyde Good), and Ruby (married her stepbrother George Laughlin who worked at the livestock sale barn in Wichita Falls). She was next to the youngest child of 8 children.
Martha's father, Raymond, was born in Cundiff, TX (which is 12 miles northeast of Jacksboro) April 2, 1897, and died in Iowa Park TX March 3, 1999 (one month short of 102). He had 2 brothers, Clyde (oil field pumper), Earl (oil field pumper), and one sister Dolly. He was next to the youngest child of 4 children.
Martha was the youngest of 4 children, being born when her sister Doris was 21 years old and already married and a farmer's wife, her sister Edna was 19 years old, and her brother Bruce was 16 years old. The United States was fully engaged in WWII and times were difficult. Martha grew up on the small family dairy farm in Iowa Park with her mom and dad milking twice a day and her dad also raising wheat and running a few head of cattle on leased land.
At age 3 Martha had rheumatic fever and began to show her ability to persevere in spite of adversity throughout her life. She married James Donald (Don) Cope on August 22,1958 in Iowa Park, Texas. Donald was a machinist and they lived in Fort Worth, Texas where he worked. They had 2 children born in Fort Worth: Donna Gayle Hinson (Cope) and James David Cope. Donald and his brother, Raymond Cope, bought a machine shop in Olney, Texas in the mid-1960s and the family moved to Olney. They later bought the Mowrey Gun Works in Iowa Park that made replica flint lock long rifles and moved the production to Olney, Texas. Their third child, Christopher (Chris) Scott Cope, was born July 2, 1971. Sixteen days after Chris's third birthday, Donald Cope was severely injured in the head while working on a metal lathe at Mowrey Gun Works and passed away six days later on July 24, 1974 at the age of 37. Once again Martha showed her ability to persevere during adversity. She worked in Olney supporting and raising her family as a single mom. She moved to Wichita Falls, Texas in July 1979 working for an insurance company.
On September 12, 1980 Martha married Chuck Dennis in Wichita Falls, Texas and they united themselves and their children as one family. Chuck's children, Kevin Dennis and Julie Letsche (Dennis) and Martha's children, Donna, David, and Chris became a loving family. Martha joined Chuck in his business in 1986 working full time for over 32 years as a professional Realtor.
The family grew with 11 grandchildren: Steven Hinson, Stacie Hinson, Sarah Moore (Hinson), Christen House (Cope), Courtney Hunter (Cope), Cody Cope, Jackson Letsche, Andrew Letsche, Benjamin Letsche, Zachary Letsche, and Lee Dennis, and 9 great-grandchildren: Braelyn Hinson, Mason Hinson, Teagan Hinson, Ava Armendarez, Preston Moore, Sutton Moore, Ace House, Reed House, Caden Cope.
January 13, 1994, son Chris Cope died at the age of 22 following injuries received when a tire blew on a forklift at a construction site while working alongside Chuck. Parents are not supposed to bury their children. Martha again persevered and helped to show all the family what it is to love deeply and to care for each other.
Martha lost her brother Bruce February 22, 1987, her sister Doris September 14, 1998, and her sister Edna July 18, 2013. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law: Jean Good of Texarkana, TX, Kitty Wall of Wichita Falls, TX, and Karla Barnes of Pauls Valley, OK, brother-in-law Curtis Sullivan of Wichita Falls, TX, Niece, Connie Story and husband Bruce of Fredericksburg, TX and Nephews: Craig Good and wife Pat of Round Top, TX, Kevin Good and wife Robin of Austin, TX, Carvel Good and wife Dianne of Texarkana, TX, and Lowell Good of Lake Jackson, TX.
Martha and Chuck went on 11 medical mission trips from 1996 thru 2006 with other Christians from the Faith Village Church of Christ. Martha joined with others in the preparation of the prescriptions before each trip and helped to distribute over 104,000 prescriptions to over 40,000 patients in various locations in the central American country of Nicaragua. The extreme poverty Martha saw there caused her to continue to go on every mission trip in spite of medical issues of her own.
Her greatest perseverance began December 5, 2018 as she and Chuck learned she had acute myeloid leukemia. Her two-year battle was heroic as she persevered thru the chemo treatments, excruciating pain, and restricted access to others due to her weakened immune system. She never gave up. She never wavered in her faith in Christ Jesus. Like other adversities she had faced, she met this one with the same perseverance, same positive attitude, and always showing a depth of love for the needs of others above her own.
The pilgrimage of Martha Gayle Dennis as a Christian daughter, wife, sister, mother, granny, aunt, professional business woman, and missionary came to an end January 7, 2021 at home in Wichita Falls, TX. All who knew her miss her beautiful smile, abiding love, and indominable spirit for life and godliness. It is an honor to be her husband and to become as one, inseparable in our love even in death. Chuck Dennis
