Gerald Disch Obituary

Disch
Coach Gerald Mark Disch (Jerry), passed away of natural causes May 20, 2021 at his home in Atlantic Beach, Florida, two months shy of his 95th birthday. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lillie Atter Disch; five children, Debra Criman (Mike), Mike (Annika), Sam (Vera), Dan (Barbara) and Katy Millan (Noel); nine grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Jerry was born in Tacoma, Washington July 31, 1926 to Mark and Florence Disch. He grew up in hardscrabble logging camps during much of the Great Depression, before his family settled in Willamina, Oregon. He graduated from Willamina high school in 1943 and promptly joined the Navy at 17. In 1944, he earned his wings, and as a Naval Aviator, served as a squadron pilot on the USS Princeton. During his time as a Navy Pilot, he made over 65 carrier landings and served in SE Asia at the close of the war. He loved the Navy and he loved to fly, an experience that shaped his life for the next 70 years. He met his wife, Lillie, at the old Jacksonville Beach pier, while he was stationed at NAS. After getting married in 1949, they moved back to Oregon, where he completed his degree at Linfield College in McMinnville. He played and lettered in football and track and field. After graduating in 1952, he was hired at Moro, Oregon Senior high school. There, he was a mathematics teacher, head football coach, head basketball coach, and head baseball coach, sometimes, simultaneously. His next stop, in 1955, was at Mclaughlin high school in Milton-Freewater, Oregon. He taught Math, was the head football and head track and field coach.
In 1957, after three children and one too many cold winters with snow, Jerry took his family to Jacksonville and Lillie's family. He lived and worked and raised a family of five kids here, was a grandfather and great grandfather, happily, for the rest of his life. Jerry coached football and track at Englewood high school from 1957-65, developing one of the city's best track and field programs. In 1965, he became head football coach and Athletic Director at Forrest (Westside) high school. There he was Coach of the Year in 68, his football teams won two conference championships, a district championship in 1976, and played in several high school bowl games. As the Athletic Director he worked hard for all sports, including girl's high school athletics and the women who coached them. One of the things he was most proud of was that he integrated sports at Forrest high school, beginning in the 60s. The difficulties for some of the school's African American athletes was never lost on him, and he worked in his way, to make sure that the opportunity to play and participate was open to all kids. After earning his Masters Degree from UNF in 1976, he moved into administration, becoming, from 1983-1992, Duval County Supervisor for Athletics and Physical Education. It was a job that he believed was enormously important. What made Jerry unique was that he never lost his belief in the capacity for sports to teach, to instruct, and to mold the kids who played, and to impart the fundamental importance of honesty, hard work, toughness, and self-discipline. Those beliefs are what he brought to the job, every day, until he retired after 35 years. He was inducted into the Jacksonville Sports Hall of Fame in 1991, and the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1993. Throughout his life, his greatest joy was his family, his wife and daughters and sons, his grand kids and great grand kids and nieces and nephews. We will all remember him and carry our love for him in our hearts. A Catholic service will be held Wednesday, May 26th @ 12pm, at St.John the Baptist Catholic church, on Mayport Rd in Atlantic Beach, FL. There will be a reception at St John's following the service. Per the guidelines of the Diocese of St Augustine and the State of Florida, face coverings are suggested for unvaccinated but optional. 2008, Shrine Bowl Jacksonville Florida. I invited Coach Disch to be the guest speaker at the 2008 Shrine Bowl. After my introduction, the crowd of three hundred Coaches, Players and parents enjoyed the inspirational words of Coach Disch. I was the CEO of Morocco Shriners that year 2008 and Coach Disch expressed his enjoyment for the invitation. See photo of Cheryl Whitaker Lumpkin, Jerry and myself. We had a wonderful evening. Coach Disch had a great impact on me. He brought camaraderie between me and my fellow athletes. His letter of recommendation to Coach Carnes at the UoF played a big part in me getting a track and field scholarship . Even with the high school being named after NB Forest Coach Disch and Coach Bishop kept race off the playing field and encouraged off campus friendships. I remember him downing half a bottle of peptobismol before every game. The pressure on him must have been very high. May he rest in peace. Tom R

Coach Jerry Disch was very instrumental in bending young men's personal mold, fostering and nurturing a much positive influence in their life. I received his counsel along with his coaching staff in several different sports that was extremely positive that helped shape my life. I would call on COACH for advice or for a personal appearance during our class of 1971 class reunions, he always delivered. Coach Jerry Disch, Danny Door, Fred Girgis, Joe Parker, Chuck McPhillamy and Sams were always available. Thanks Coach, I am a better person today for taking your sound advice. Lillie, you were the smiling face I saw every day when I signed in (70s), and our connection with Jerry was that Billie Parker, my father in law hired Jerry for the job at Forrest. He spoke often of the wonderful man that Jerry was!

Most people feel fortunate to have a positive influence on a few people's lives, Coach Disch had a positive influence on me and thousands of others, especially in their critical teenage years.

He was the consummate role model teaching us hard work and attention to detail were the keys to success regardless of your talent level on and off the field. Win with humility and lose with class, but always do your best and remember "excuses lose ball games."

My condolences to the Disch Family. Coach Disch was a remarkable Coach and touched so many students over the many years of coaching. My brother and myself were both involved in sports at Forrest High School. My brother wrestled and ran cross country (class of 1973). I played softball, volleyball and ran cross country (class of 1977). We both joined the military after high school and served 20 years. The leadership our coaches at Forrest provided help make those decisions. Coach Disch thank you for your faithful and honorable service to our GREAT Nation. And thank you for all the students you taught and encouraged through the years. GO REBELS. GOD BLESS. RIP.

What I appreciated about Coach Disch , was that before every football game and after the football game he gathered the team together to pray with us we would always say the Lord's prayer, I respected him for that greatly.

Condolences to Coach Disch’s families. He taught, and shaped so many students, in a positive way. He taught me, in many classes, at Englewood HS (1958-1964)...I will always appreciate his influence.

Had the honor of playing for Coach Disch, at Forrest. To say he was a good man seems trite. He was solid in every aspect of life and had a profound influence on many like me. My favorite memories are just stopping by his office for a long chat. Sometimes about football. Sometimes more. RIP Coach. A life well lived.

I was a student athlete at Forrest, graduating in 1968, and I've not seen Coach Disch since. Even so, I remember today and always will interactions with him that positively influenced me then and continue to do so now. That said, I did not know until today what a role he played as a proud member of America's Greatest Generation in WWII.

Coach Disch was a great man for many reasons, and I pray his family knows how he influenced for good so many young people over the many decades of his life.

I knew Coach Disch during most of his time at Englewood. He was a decent, understanding and caring man, particularly to those of us who were perhaps not as athletic as he might have wanted. For years after that we would see each other briefly and he was always gracious and friendly.

A "Greatest Generation" guy, his military service is not a surprise.
