I only just saw this today, when I looked up my long ago piano teacher! So sorry to Dr. Goldberger's family. He was my piano teacher at the Manners College of Music Preparatory school in the late 1970s-1980s, from age 11 to 16. Every time I play, I remember Dr. Goldberger! His calm, patient way of teaching, along with his particular sense and teaching of technique (often correcting the printed manuscript ) has resonated with me my entire life. I especially enjoyed the Carnegie Auditions he introduced me to, as a novice piano player and music student. What a wonderful experience that was. I'll remember him fondly as a teacher and someone I looked up to.

David was in one of my dreams this week. In the dream, we both knew that he was visiting from the "other side," but neither of us dwelled on that. We had a nice long heartfelt conversation, of the sort we enjoyed a few times per year over many decades, discussing life events and things going on in the world. David was my piano teacher, beginning at age 12 at Mannes in New York City, but our friendship went beyond those five years of lessons, and lasted for more than fifty years until his passing.

Just learned of David's passing. He was a long time friend of my aunt in Washington DC and I came to know him over the years from 1975 on. Lovely person. I have an album he recorded in 1971 - The Works of Beethoven. [email protected]

David -- teacher, friend, challenger. Started me on piano, age 9, at Mannes. Challenged me with Schoenberg (which he insisted I perform for visitors), along with Haydn, Brahms, and Schumann. His intricate doctoral dissertation, on controversial edits to Schubert manuscripts, was mind blowing. He was greatly influenced by Schnabel, and was a close associate of his son, the brilliant Karl Ulrich. He remained enthusiastic and supportive even after I drifted away from piano in college. We visited for many years in his corner apartment on RIverside Drive, also with his soul mate, Saul, who lived upstairs. After they retired to Florida, he reported spending addictive mornings listening to opera (at the expense of practicing), and became active as an organizer at SAGE. (I think I have my facts right!) Now in my 70's, I love nothing more than to pull out the volumes he gave me in the 1950's, which are now quite fragile, practice what he taught, and hear his quiet commentary in the background. So sorry I missed saying good-bye.

I just found out of Davids passing. He was my piano teacher and a winderful man. Thanks to him I developed a profound love for music and the patience for precision. I wish I had had a chance to tell him this 20yrs later the immense impact he had in my formative years. God bless his sweet wise soul. I will miss you. Vanessa Chammah

So sorry that it has taken until now to voice my condolences. I live in California, and was unaware of David's passing until today. I was fortunate enough to be David's piano student from the age of 12 through my high school graduation in 1973. We always stayed in touch, even after I moved to California in 1978. I am so glad that I said yes in October 2014 when David said he would be in New York City and asked if I might be in New York too. We attended a concert at the 92nd Street Y together, shared several meals and a long walk along the Hudson River. We never ran out of things to talk about, as David was always an intellectual hungry for knowledge, as well as being a kind and empathetic person. I feel lucky to have counted David as one of my lifetime friends. My only regret is that I missed his piano performances in celebration of his 80th, 85th and 90th birthdays because I live so far away. I will surely miss his presence at the other end of the phone and in my life.

I met David while I was a faculty member of Long Island University's Music Department. We remained friends for many years thereafter. A person of great intellect and loyal friend, I will truly miss him.

I met David because of my Uncle Saul. David was always so kind when my sister and I visited my uncle both in NY and Florida. He was so welcoming. I will always be grateful to David for his kindness, love, and compassion to my Uncle Saul, especially during the most critical time of my uncle's illness...David was there for him and helped him emotionally, being there for him..Rest in peace David.....Thank you for being the person you were...

Miami, 12/15/13. David joined us to celebrate my son's wedding.

My sister and I were fortunate to have had David Goldberger as our piano teacher in the 1950's. Over the years my sister stayed in touch with David and a few years ago I re-established a relationship with him. We spoke occasionally in the winter and celebrated our birthdays in Riverdale in the summer. I was already looking forward to our July lunch date. To David's family I send our sincere condolences.

Uncle David - You were my great uncle, my piano teacher, a role model, and a friend. Your beautiful piano playing inspired me to become a better pianist. Your love of travel made me appreciate the value of learning about other people and places. Your passion for teaching made me realize the importance of being an intellectually curious person. As my Great Uncle, you made such a great impact on my life. I will forever cherish the memories we had together. Thanks for everything, Uncle David. You will always hold a special place in my heart.
