Bertha Kaufman

Bertha Kaufman, born Berta Appel, fondly known as Betty was born in Bonn, Germany April 24, 1925. Berta fled Duesseldorf (Dusseldorf), Germany as a 14 year old Jewish girl on the Kinder Transport Train to Great Britain on June 6, 1939 to escape the Holocaust. She was one of the 10,000 children saved from the Nazi concentration camps. Mom told me her parents took her to the train station in Duesseldorf to board the Kinder Transport and she never cried while waving goodbye to her parents. "I wasn't going to let them see me cry." She was a very strong, proud child and woman throughout her life. After World War II, she returned to Germany and married Heinz R. Kaufman. In 1955 they immigrated to the United States and became U.S. citizens residing in Manchester, New Hampshire. Betty would walk or swim daily at the YMCA before going to work. She worked as a bookkeeper for many years at Profile Furniture and eventually at Brady/Sullivan Properties from where she retired at the age of 80. Betty enjoyed animals especially cats, She spent years feeding and caring for many feral cats in the neighborhood. It was always, all about the animals. She loved reading and learning, music, plays, photography and traveling. Storytelling was something Betty did in her later years, sharing her learning and life experiences with others. Betty passed away May 1, 2019 at the age of 94. Her wishes were to be cremated and to be released at sea, which is on Sept. 17, 2019. She is survived by her daughter, Vera Kaufman, nephews, Richard and Harold Kaufman, sister in law, Christel Kaufman and cousin, Denny Meudt.
