John and Irma Burr loved Martha, as did all seven of their children. May she rest in peace. But somehow I can see Martha in heaven, sharp as ever, commenting on world affairs. Kate Burr Oliver

It is with deep sadness that I heard of Martha's passing. She was my mentor in oral history but also in how to live a good and loving life. She had a tremendous impact on the field of oral history, setting the highest of standards. She was a very special person, and I will always count myself as very lucky to have known her as I did.

Martha was a long-time advocate for teachers when I joined the Oral History Association. She was witty, kind, generous, warm, gregarious--she embodied what has made the Oral History Association a special home for a diverse group of independent, public, academic and teaching historians. She will be missed.

I did not know Ms. Ross personally, but her work had a tremendous impact on the professionals and mentors who work with my students on oral history projects. She will be missed, but never forgotten.

Martha was a pioneering oral historian, setting a high standard for oral history practice, and serving as a model for generations of students. She was a marvelous soul, a truly welcoming and generous spirit.

She raised 6 children, and then went back to school to become a leader in her field. And that's not to mention her double major in college or her passionate advocacy of civil rights! What a great life. We will always love you!
