ELLEN MONDALE Obituary
Ellen Smead Mondale
Passed on January 5, 2019 at 7:40 p.m., surrounded by family. Born April 12, 1943, a "present" for her sister who was born on the same date five years earlier, Ellen was predeceased by parents Fay Smead Mondale and Robert Lester Mondale, uncles Buford Mondale, Richard Smead, Clifford Mondale and Clarence (Pete) Mondale and sister Tarand Mondale Swenstad. Survivors include daughters Jessica Fay Flannery (Dan) of Verona NJ, Jennifer Manix Molitor of Tampa, FL, and Joanna Lee Manix of Frederick, MD-caregiver for years until the very end. Other survivors include sisters Karen S. Mondale, Julia K. Jensen (Jim); ex-husband and friend Timothy J. Manix; three grandchildren and one great grandchild, nieces, nephews, cousins- including first cousin and friend Kathy Smead O'Brien of Bethesda MD; and uncles Walter F. Mondale and William Morton Mondale.As a free spirit, Ellen enjoyed her varied work as REA Loans Analyst, waitress, bartender, business owner (taxi company), her time in real estate and car sales, and, best of all, as Adoption Counselor, Humane Society, Montgomery County, Maryland. Ellen's motto: Live life, love life, and live in the moment." Special thanks to Kensington Maryland Meals on Wheels, Montgomery County Hospice workers, and to friends Natalie Schwartz, Arun Muruganand Judy Furlow-Grannas who gave so generously of their time. Ellen also wanted to mention Dave Michaelis and close Swarthmore High School friends including Maggi O'Brien Carter and David Walmsley.To honor Ellen's wishes, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, the family is requestingmemorial donations to be made in her name to the ASPCA at https://www.aspca.org/

Ellen was my neighbor and friend. She was a wonderful inspiration to me to be independent, caring, and to love life! I loved her stories of seeing Elvis and living in Bethesda. She would listen to me and offer advice and, most importantly, told me to respect myself and that I deserved to be treated well. I am happy to have been able to spend quality time with her during this past year. She loved her daughters and her dogs, and she valued her friends! I miss her, already.
