I was extremely fortunate to have JOS as my first boss in Canberra. His leadership then, and subsequently, was simply inspirational. Among his many other attributes, I will always remember his loyalty - to his principles, and to his country. At a personal level, along with Nancy, John was a decent, kind person.

I was a Treasury colleague and friend of John Stone for more than 60 years. His intelligence, capacity for work and guidance to younger people were admirable qualities. He did not resile from providing sound advice to Ministers for many years. His example helped me in many ways. I extend my sincere condolences to John's splendid family.

A legend of Australian public life, and a personal role model for me as a young economist in my 20s.
His intellect, integrity, and fearless defence of principle set a standard few could match. We will not see his like again.

My sincere condolences to the Stone family. As a Treasury novice, I first met John some 50 years ago. He had a huge and positive infuence on my career. I will remember him above all for his loyalty, leadership, intellect and for having the courage of his convictions.

John Stone contributed so much to Australia. I am just one of many who will miss him. He was a devoted family man, a passionate man and a true patriot.
