Judith HEMSCHEMEYER Obituary

HEMSCHEMEYER
Judith

Aug. 7, 1935 - Aug. 4, 2025;
translator and poet

For many years, Judy taught creative writing and literature courses at the
University of Central Florida.

Judy died so unexpectedly, just three days before her 90th birthday.
She was still living independently in Roanoke, Virginia. In earlier times, Judy had devoted many years translating the entire oeuvre of the exceptional, 20th century Russian poet, Anna Akhmatova.

Judy was the beloved mother of Stephanie Rosenfeld and David Rosenfeld and the much loved grandmother of Callie Millington.

She was also the dearest friend and partner of
Moya Henderson, composer and instrument maker, Sydney, Australia.

Unacknowledged but the Akhmatova translations depended to a large extent to the assistance of Roberta Reeder who dictated a version of the Russian which Hemschemeyer then worked on.
