Sheila Wickenden Obituary

WICKENDEN
Sheila Mary (nee Godbert)
1927 - 2024
Sheila passed away peacefully on
19 December in her 98th year.
Sheila was born in the old county of Lancashire, UK, on 28 August 1927 and in recent years lived
in Paddington, NSW.
Sheila was the much-loved Mother of John and Neil, and Mother-in-Law to Heather and Mary. She was a devoted and loving Granny to her four grandchildren, Charles, Eleanor, Thomas and Amanda, and her grandson-in-law Nick, and Great Granny to Jude.
Sheila was a force of life, believed in hard work by example and was a lifelong Anglophile who found it hard to resist the call of the Oxfordshire countryside.
She was a fierce protector of her children who was always determined to do things "her way".
She was also a dab hand at Mahjong.
Sheila will be greatly missed by her extended family and many friends both in Australia and in the UK.

'Mrs Wick' was an extraordinary person and the 'go to' first stop/resource for very 'green' Summer Clerks at Freehill Hollingdale & Page (which I was many years ago!)... and ... not so 'green' senior practitioners (which I was fortunate to become).
No problem was too hard, and no question was left without an answer (both legal and cheeky) or at least an extremely valuable pointer in the right direction!!
'Mrs Wick' was an amazing person and Freehill Hollingdale & Page were so lucky to have her. 'Mrs Wick' contributed enormously to the rich and vibrant fabric of the firm in the time she was with the firm.
Vale 'Mrs Wick' and thank you.
My condolences to the Wickenden family.

Oh dear Sheila! The archetypal librarian, peering at paralegals and young lawyers over her glasses, on first meeting, with strict authority and judgement, then later proven to be the most warm, most helpful, most clever, most smile-full person you could hope to meet. My sincere condolences.

I got to know Sheila in Henley, playing Mahjong. She was great company!
I valued her wit, her wisdom and her indomitable spirit!
She restored my love of books and reading. I'm so pleased I got to show her-with John- Oxford and Christ Church College, home to her beloved Alice (in Wonderland!)
Rest in peace, dear Sheila, your light shines brightly still.

Sheila lived next door to us during my childhood and was in many respects a grandmother to me. I have very fond memories of playing with her doll house, her tea sets and in her magical garden - the smell of sun-warmed geraniums will forever be the scent I associate with her. She would always welcome me in when I trotted over to her house, no matter what she was doing at the time.
She introduced me to a love of second-hand books and we went to many a book sale over the years. Many treasured books on my shelves are there courtesy of her.
As I grew older, I adored her dry and irreverent sense of humour and tendency to tell the truth (regardless of whether the listener wanted it or not). I admired her energy and drive and hope to emulate that in my life.
She will always hold a very special place in my heart. My heartfelt condolences to John, Neil and the family.

I first met Sheila playing mahjong and she very quickly became a dear and much loved friend.
She was sorely missed when she finally decided to return to live in Australia to be closer to her family but we looked forward so much to her annual visits to the UK.
She will always remain in my thoughts.

We will miss Sheila so much in the U.K. She was such an interesting and amusing lady with a very active brain! . We met when she turned up to play Mah Jong with us some 15 or so years ago and quickly became a part of that group and our little family too. It is sad that we won´t be seeing her again at Hawes Farm . With all our love and condolences to her family from Derek, Penny and our families and her Mah Jong friends in the Oxford countryside. RIP Sheila.

We first met Sheilah when we became friends with Neil at university.
She always had an outgoing positive personality and for that reason she got along very well with Mario,Tony´s father who painted her house in Greenwich. They had lots of laughs and good times together. We remember her as a very independent woman who had a happy and fulfilling life. She will be fondly remembered by the Grana family.
