I am a resident of Macleay Island, found Roland's book in our local op-shop and was intrigued to discover Roland had lived on Lamb Island for a time! I have just finished reading his book "I Was Only Sixteen" and was left shattered, and very moved. What a life and what experiences he had. I was so hoping he was still around, so I could tell him how his book affected me! What a legacy he has left! You must miss him dearly.

I first met Roland in 1981 after my family emigrated from the former Yugoslavia. I was 13 at the time. My parents purchased the holiday units he and his wife owned in Hervey Bay.
Roland told me many stories of his time in the AIF and the Z Force. I credit Roland with teaching me much of what it means to be Australian and my eventual enlistment in the Australian Defence Forces. I still think on him every ANZAC day as well as the mates I've lost in over 30 years of military service in Australia and overseas. I feel privileged to have know him and diminished for his loss.
Lest we forget Roland.
