Kathleen 'Kay' Mitchell
Kathleen Mitchell (Schobert) passed away peacefully Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, at the age of 89. Kay, the oldest daughter of Pete and Ethel Schobert, was born on the family farm on February 15, 1935. Kay lived on the family farm for nearly her entire life, leaving for the city for a short time after graduation, before returning home. She remained on the farm until she moved into Lafleche Health Center four years ago. It was on that farm that where she met Gordon Mitchell, the hired hand. They were married on July 17, 1954 and settled on that same farm to raise their family. Though there were some challenging times for their family, Kay faced those challenges with grace and determination. While family was very important to Kay, her community also held a special place in her life. Kay was a devoted member of the United Church. She played the organ and piano at church for 72 years - from the time she was 12 until she was 84. She was an active member of the UCW and the Church Council, and was a Camp Woodboia alumni. As a girl, Kay belonged to CGIT then later was a leader when her sister Arlene joined. Other organizations Kay was a member of included: The Order of the Eastern Star, Women's Institute, Homemakers, 4H, and the Horticultural Society. She was an organizer and enjoyed putting together events. She also helped put together community cookbooks and history books. She helped organize the Melaval School Reunion and the Schobert Homestead 100th Anniversary Reunion. In her spare time, Kay enjoyed baking, sewing, and gardening. Her flowers were beautiful and garden bountiful. The strawberries and raspberries from her garden were second to none! Kay loved to sit and visit with friends and family over a cup of tea. Her phone was often busy as she loved to chat on the phone, especially with her sister Melva. Kay was a giver for most of her life. Taking care of the family and the farm, and giving back to her community. She taught us the importance of being caring, thoughtful, and community-minded, which is something we will all carry with us throughout our lives. Kay is survived by her three children: Duane (Natalie) Mitchell, Douglas Mitchell and Janet (Darrel) Marcenko; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren: Amy (Curtis) Jorgensen, daughters Maisy and Esmee; Darren (Janessa) Marcenko, son Myles; Cody (Kaitlynn) Mitchell, sons Bauer and Bennett; Amanda (Roman) Duxbury, children Brooklyn and Riley.
