William Schuweiler
William (Bill) was born March 17, 1923 on the family farm near Limerick, SK. He passed away November 18, 2022, with his family by his side, just four months shy of his 100th birthday, Bill was one of seven children born to Andrew and Michalina (Dunicz) Schuweiler. Bill went to Highland Valley School to grade eight. Bill walked the mile to school where he was to start the fire in the stove before school started. During the winter Bill played hockey at the nearby slough or the Limerick rink with the other Highland Valley School boys, some being Ken Hamilton, Art Sinclair and the Best brothers, and during the warmer months they played fastball. They were an athletic and competitive team that played against the neighbouring Bruce and Limerick schools, or wherever nine or more players wanted to play a game of round robin. Bill loved to pitch which he passed onto his children Clayton, Glenda and Mary Anne. The love of playing softball continued with his family by having a ball diamond in the middle of both the Limerick and Valor family homesteads. Every family function included a ball game with anyone who could catch or swing a bat. There was always something to be done on the farm. Bill remembered at the age of two, his job was to pick the eggs. He farmed for the majority of his life, working from sunrise to well after sunset. He ended his working career as a farmer at 85 but continued to rent land. He loved the farm. When Bill finished school in mid-1930?s, farming was a tough business because of the drought and the depression. He went to work for a few different farmers like McGivors, and when the thrashing crew showed up, his job was to oil and grease the chain. Bill would have been about fourteen. While working for the farmers he saved enough money to go to Tech School in Moose Jaw for carpentry, architecture, mechanics and welding. He worked at the Canadian Swift Meat Packing Plant while he was going to school. Then in 1939 he was called back home to the farm because his older brothers, Steve, John and Vic had signed up for the war and Carl was on his own farm. As Bill was only 16, he had to help farm the crops during the war. Because of the drought in the 30's, Bill's dad had to sell some of their horses and when things were better, Andrew went to Montana to buy four broncos for $25/horse. Bill and John broke the horses to ride naming them Nick, Duke, Jack and Tom. Bill liked going to the Wood Mountain rodeo to watch the barrel racing and bull riding. Bill met the love of his life, Loraine through his sister Theresa. Theresa brought Loraine home from school to sing while Theresa played the piano. Bill would join in to sing and soon they were going to dances, bowling, movies and ball games together along with Theresa. It soon became a couples outing when Theresa met her husband-to-be Frank Smith a one of their ball games. Bill and Loraine were married on October 5, 1948. They were blessed with eight children. Bill enjoyed hunting partridge, pheasant and sometimes deer. Bird hunting was not only profitable for feeding the family but gave him time to spend with friends Alton Headrich and Ken Hamilton, plus his nephew Larry and son Clayton when they were old enough to hunt. Bill was the last of the original Knights of Columbus of the St. George's Roman Catholic Church in Assiniboia which started in 1949. Bill took up golfing with his friend Ken Hamilton in his 50?s. He enjoyed the game and would get his children to play as well. His last played at the age of 96 with his granddaughter Sarah in Assiniboia. Bill took a few trips to British Columbia, Alberta, Yellowstone and Cody in Wyoming, and the Black Hills in South Dakota with Loraine, daughter's Karen (Ernest) and Nancy. These places had wildlife that he enjoyed seeing. Years later, he traveled back to Yellowstone, the Black Hills and various other places with Mary Anne's family and Glenda (Jean Marc) after Loraine passed. In 2021, he travelled with daughters Karen and Donna to Medicine Hat to visit his sister Theresa. In September 2022, he travelled with Karen and Glenda from Regina to Assiniboia to visit Clayton on the Limerick farm and see the Shetland pony. He had his favorite meal at 121 Steakhouse - sausage and eggs, and then visited Loraine at the Mount Hope Cemetery. Bill has 8 children, 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
