Richard Steppan Obituary

In loving memory of Richard John Steppan, taken from us suddenly, while doing something he loved outdoors on June 17, 2017. Richard will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Linda, of 46 years, three sons Michael (Lucy), Matthew (Pamela), and Andrew (Jim), 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, 2 brothers-in-law, Derwin (Ann) Bonney, Richard (Connie) Bonney, as well as 2 sisters-in-law, Dianne Shirley and Kim (James) Lewis, numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved friends and "furry friends".

Rick was born in Moose Jaw, SK on April 26, 1949. His family moved to Wainwright, AB, when Rick was a young child. The family then moved to Fort McMurray in 1965, where he met and married the love of his life, and true soulmate, Linda. They raised their family, while Rick was employed by Suncor. Rick remained employed with Suncor for 38 years and gained many fond memories and friendships. In 1989, Rick and Linda moved with their family to Athabasca, and built their dream home on their own piece of paradise. In 2005, Rick retired and spent his time doing what he loved; kayaking, canoeing and "goin fishing", taking care of their horses and their land. Many of his days were spent with Linda and their dog Nellie, close beside him.

In January 2017, by a true miracle, Rick was a perfect match when Linda needed a kidney transplant. Rick and Linda struck through thick and thin throughout their marriage. Rick took his vows very seriously in sickness and in health. By the miracle of his gift they recuperated like they did everything; together.

Rick was predeceased by his father, John Steppan, his mother Mary Steppan, father-in-law Howard Bonney, mother-in-law Gladys Bonney, brother-in-law, Eldon Bonney.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alberta Kidney Foundation.

Richard's care entrusted to Strome Memorial and Funeral Services.

Sad to learn of Richard's passing. I first met Rick in the mid 60's in Fort McMurray. Played a couple of games of pool at Harris's Pool Hall and came out on the losing end. Worked a bit with Rick over his career at Suncor where his efforts were always respected. Always a nice and sincere fellow.

Condolences to Richard's family.

Will miss seeing Richard on his quad enjoying the great outdoors. Richard was a kind and gentle soul. His light lives on in Linda and will continue to shine bright. Couldn't have asked for a better neighbor.

We were neighbours of the Steppan Family from 1967 and knew Richards Dad and Mum, John and Mary, the salt of the earth. I worked with John in Extraction and we became close friends. We are shocked to learn of the untimely passing of Richard and send all our condolences to the entire Family. Richard was very well liked at Suncor and a hard working colleague to all of us. Rest in Peace, Brother.

One of the finest people it has been our pleasure to meet and with whom to share a smile, and the world is diminished by his passing. Our thoughts are with you - Linda, and with your family.
