Robert Savage Obituary

Of Stratford, age 84, passed away unexpectedly on December 10, 2022 at Stratford General Hospital, surrounded by his devoted family. Bob leaves behind his loving wife of 60 years, Carol (Livingston) Savage. Proud and dear father of Mike Savage, Jill (Scott) Reiner, Jen (Mike) Knechtel and Nikki (Chris) Gaylor. Adoring grandfather to Adam (Angela), Renée, Tate, Amelia, Luke, April, Owen, Brett, and Jordyn and great grandfather to Daniel, Anna, Kaia, Joshua and Lily. Bob will forever be remembered for his quiet humour by his In-laws Peter (Fran) Livingston, Wendy Addison, Jim Livingston, Roslyn (Reid) MacDuff, cousin Betty, and his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Edith and George Savage, mother and father-in-law Audrey and Ted Livingston, brother Pete Savage, and brother-in-law Bill Addison. An accomplished athlete, "Sav", as he was known by many, excelled as a shortstop and outfielder in baseball and as a goaltender in both hockey and lacrosse. Backstopping for the St. Michael's Majors (Toronto Maple Leafs organization) and the Brampton Excelsiors, Bob was referenced as "the most exciting offensive goalie" and known for his "catlike reflexes". He was recognized with inductions into the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame for baseball, hockey and lacrosse, and the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame for lacrosse. Bob went on to coach baseball and hockey for many years, guiding young athletes to success including a national championship in baseball with the 1977 Stratford JS News peewees. In recognition of his leadership in coaching, the team was inducted into the Stratford Sports Hall of Fame, and also recognized on the Stratford Baseball Wall of Fame at National Stadium. Bob's many passions, in addition to his commitment to his family, included travel and his broad circle of friends for walks, coffee meet-ups, playing cards, slo-pitch, golfing, and volunteer work. He also enjoyed a successful career in the automotive industry where he developed many business and social relationships. Carol and her family thank the Emergency Department staff of the Stratford General Hospital. Special recognition to nurse Trish - your thoughtfulness, kindness, compassion, and care will forever be remembered. A drop-in celebration of Bob's life will take place on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at the Stratford Golf and Country Club from 1- 4 p.m. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Stratford General Hospital Foundation at www.sghfoundation.org or through the W.
