Bruce Fleming Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Dr. Bruce Fleming. Musical aficionado, passionate soccer player, fisherman and gardener, he was a multi-dimensional man. As a hard-working, dedicated emergency physician, teacher, and mentor, medicine played a central role in his life. He was humble, gracious and connected easily with all those who crossed his path. Bruce was predeceased by his parents, Bert and Phyllis Fleming of West Vancouver. He is survived by his brother, Peter Fleming; sister, Barbara Sandor; wife, Elizabeth Fleming; and his three children, Andrew Fleming (Stephanie Schneider), Julia Jourdain (Tim Jourdain) and Kate Fleming (Ehren Salazar). He was also the proud grandparent to Cohen and Wallis Fleming and Ethan and Lucas Jourdain. Moments goofing around with his grandchildren, grown children and wife were when he was truly at his happiest. We will miss him tremendously. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, August 18, at the Robert H Lee Alumni Centre, from 4:30pm to 7:00pm, and all are welcome to attend.

Hello Liz. While I have lost contact with you since we were in Bob Poutt's program in 1977-78, I have often googled Bruce's name over the years and each time, his list of accomplishments grew. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and wanted you to know that I have such fond memories of our year at UBC and that an "old" friend from NB is thinking in your direction at this time. Regards, John Healy

Bruce was the kind of person about whom people genuinely say: 'He's a really great guy.' An all round good human being. My condolences to the family.

The Adirondack Chair:
Twenty-seven years ago I worked in the Emergency Department at UBC Hospital.
Dr Fleming was part of an amazing group of people who worked there at that time.
One day I decided I wanted an Adirondack Chair and bought myself a "kit".
Big mistake. After months of agony I admitted to the group that the "kit" was still in pieces on my floor. I couldn´t figure out the "plan" that came with the "kit".
Bruce calmly turned to me and said: "bring it in. We´ll see what we can do"
So one night when all the patients had left we tackled the chair. I remember a lot of activity and drilling.
I also remember walking out with the chair as the sun rose.
The back of the picture said: Bruce, Carol and Carol.
UBC ER April 1995. 4:00:am!
I still have the chair.
Thank you UBC ER and Dr Fleming for showing me early on what team work, collaboration and caring looks like.
It´s something I´ve never forgot.

So sorry to hear of the loss of Bruce to the family. Dr. Bruce Fleming was the custodian of the letters from Dr. Alexander Fleming and Louisa Biden Fleming leading to their wedding in 1866.

I have lovely memories of working with Dr. Fleming when he was a committee chair with the College. He was a consummate chair - thoughtful, inclusive and fair. And he never failed to quietly slip me a box of chocolates for the staff at the end of a meeting ...

My condolence to his family - I'm sorry for your loss.

Bruce was a fabulous educator and leader, who gently and graciously mentored me as we developed an Integrated Clerkship in the North. Thank you

During my days as Undergraduate Program Director for Anesthesiology, Bruce was a supportive colleague with boundless energy, motivation and good spirits who served as an inspiration to all of us that he led. I have one anecdote vis a vis his soccer playing - a team of VGH faculty were playing a UBC fourth year team prior to their leaving for a European soccer tour. Bruce scored the only goal that day, with a shot from distance that cleanly went in the upper right corner inches from the intersection of the upright and the top bar. World class !!

I am sorry I cannot attend Bruce's Celebration of Life.
I am living in Nova Scotia so unable to attend. I am once again, deeply saddened by Bruce's passing. He was exceptional in the medicine he practiced, the thousands of patients he cared for, and the staff that loved him. An incredible loss to all of us. Bonnie Beed

We are greatly saddened by this great loss to family, friends, and community.
Bruce was an enthusiastic supporter of Kerrisdale Soccer, and active with the many teams his kids played on.
Our thoughts and hearts are with you all.
We will be out of town on August 18, but will be with you in spirit.
Bob, Carol, and Susan.
