David Seaweed Obituary

It is with profound sadness we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of David Seaweed of New Westminster, BC on May 21, 2025 at the age of 61. Born on August 5, 1963 in Vancouver, BC, he was a member of Kwakiutl First Nation. His traditional name was Gi'yaxalis which means Keeper of the Treasures of the Family. He was predeceased by his mother, Irene Seaweed. He left behind his father, Chief Kwaxitola Henry Seaweed, his son, his siblings Leslie Seaweed (Donna) and Wendy Ramsay (Gary), his sister-in-law Sharron Hammond, his nieces Alison Tedford Seaweed, Melissa Vettoretti, Micaela Humeny and Ciarán Hammond, nephew Dylan Jones, and great-nephew Liam Tedford. David spent many years as the Indigenous coordinator at Douglas College and his students brought him immense joy and pride. He served on the student union and collected a number of academic credentials in his time at the college. He had a deep love of sports, refereeing basketball for decades and coaching baseball. He served on many community boards and was a strong educator on Indigenous issues. He was rarely seen without a Slurpee or his beloved teddy bear and never seen on a Friday the 13th. When he did emerge, it was usually to Kelly O'Bryan's. Quick to laugh and generous in spirit, this Sir Charles Tupper graduate is deeply missed. His service, which is open to the public, will be held at 7pm on August 5, 2025 at the basketball courts at Douglas College in New Westminster, BC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Dave Seaweed Award of Distinction through Douglas College which contributes to the education of deserving students, like Dave did. https://www.douglascollege.ca/givealumni/foundation/donate-online

My good friend Dave. Over the years, we had so many great conversations about hoops, our Douglas students, and life in general. You always left me with a smile on my face.
We lost you much too soon.
Love you pal.

A new star is in the sky shining down on all of us. Rest easy, and enjoy the view from up there `Daver´ (with heavenly coke Slurpee in hand ;)).

I love seeing his comments pop up in my facebook histories. Dave was always so friendly and fun to be around. When I worked at DC he'd come down to my office to visit. I could always here the jingle of the keys. I just can't really fathom the fact that he is gone. I'm so sorry to his family and close friends. He impacted a lot of people, probably far more than he knew!

I'm so sorry, Wendy and family for the loss of your brother. I remember David, but did not know him well, but we where very good friends and I knew Les. He has the same great smile as you both. He was very young, life is not fair sometimes. I lost both parents and 2 other family members last year. Grief is a journey, cherish the memories. Again, I'm so sorry.
