Eugene Macchi Obituary

Eugene Edward Macchi (Gene) died on May 15th after a valiant battle with cancer.
Gene was born February 23, 1952, in Teaneck New Jersey. He was the oldest of seven kids who spent many wonderful summers together at the Jersey Shore (Lavallette) and Speculator, NY.
Gene graduated from the University of Western Ontario with degrees in both business (MBA) and law. He came West as an articling student and fell in love with Vancouver, staying on to practice law in North Vancouver for over 40 years. Gene was known in his field for being generous with both his time and knowledge.
Gene had a passion for the outdoors. He loved to spend time at his cabin at Lac Des Roche with his dogs and was happiest while fly fishing and watching the stars.
Gene was a gentle soul with a steady good nature and a sense of humour till the end.
Gene was preceded in death by his father, Eugene and mother, Josephine; and sister-in-law, Lily. He is survived by his wife, Marie; and his two beloved dogs, Clarke and Finn. Also two sisters, Mary and Karen (Steve); and four brothers Mike (Leda), Rob, Tom (Bernadette), and Chuck; and brother-in-law, Tom Bradley (Lesley); and mother-in-law, Jeanette Bradley; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
Due to Covid a celebration of life will not be held, but instead, to honour Gene donations can be made in his name to his favourite charity: Pacific Assistance Dogs (PADS).

Gene was our floor senior in residence during my first year at Western. We went on the become good friends (and fishing buddies when he visited Sault Ste. Marie that summer). Then we were roommates during Gene´s 3rd year of law school in the Whitehills area of London. My wife and I visited him in Vancouver in 1984, the last time I had contact with him. A few of us from that first year class at Western are now putting together a mini-reunion in London in October. I went out to the internet to look up Gene to invite him but, unfortunately, I found his obituary instead. I am deeply saddened to learn of his death. We will certainly raise a glass in his honor at the Ceeps in October. RIP.

Saddened to learn of Gene's passing. He applied for an articling position with our firm following his graduation from the University of Western Ontario. I followed up with an inquiry to a former classmate of mine at Queen's University Law School who had become Dean of the Law School at Western, David Johnston. later Governor General of Canada. David was very complimentary of Gene and we were pleased to have him with us for several years. My condolences to his wife and family.
