James Austin Cliffe
1930 - 2024
Born in the Rural Municipality of Morton near Boissevain Manitoba April 22, 1930, Jim passed away in New Westminster BC August 11, 2024.
Jim was predeceased by his parents Austin Cliffe and Violet Fisher, his sisters Muriel Cox, Thelma Cole, nephew Alan Cole and long-time friend Hilda Bardsley-Cliffe. He is survived by his nieces Donna Gervais, Dianne Pedersen, Marlene Cole and nephews Harold Cox, Bruce and Ian Cole.
Jim started his teaching career as a young man. Due to WWII and a teacher shortage, he started Normal school before graduating high school. His first job posting was Churchill, Manitoba. He had postings at several schools during the 50's in Manitoba. He returned to the University of Manitoba where he received his bachelor's degrees in Arts and Education.
He moved to New Westminster to teach high school drama in the early 60's and retired in the early 80's to return to school to earn his Doctorate in Divinity. He travelled to and worked with various Unity congregations throughout Western Canada for 20 years.
Jim was an integral member in support of Unity of New Westminster (formerly Unity in Action Church) over many years.
He was a long-time member of the Vagabond Players theatre group.
Jim moved to Queen's Park Care Centre in 2020. The family would like to thank the staff for the care Jim received during the time he was a resident at Queen's Park. A special thank you to his friend Gerry Blackwell for his care and support of Jim, especially over the last few years. He will be missed by his community and family.
Jim led an incredibly rich and fulfilling life, touching many hearts through his various roles as a teacher, musician, traveler, journalist, playwright, and minister. His contributions to education, the arts, and his community are truly commendable.
A tribute to Jim's life will be held on Sunday, September 29th at 2 pm, at Unity of New Westminster, 1630 Edinburgh Street, New Westminster. All are welcome to attend.
