Werner Boldt FRCP(C) Obituary

Our beloved husband, father, papa, brother-in-law and uncle died suddenly on March 17. He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 58 years, Elizabeth; his son, Dr. Michael Boldt (Kate); grandchildren, Jonathan, Alec, Annika, Madeline, and Katrina; his daughter, Kathryn Howald (Gregg); grandchildren, Doug, Julia, Sarah, and Matt; his son, David Boldt (Clarissa); grandchildren, Aidan and Sofia; his brother-in-law, Bob Gladwin (Judy); and many nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly. After arriving in Canada in 1955, he prospected in the North and various areas of BC, which enabled him to pursue a career in medicine. He established a practice in Internal Medicine and Hematology in North Vancouver where his passion became the establishment of a Palliative Care Program at Lions Gate Hospital. He felt so privileged to live in such a wonderful country that allowed him the opportunity to pursue his dreams and work with so many fine people along the way.

Well done love, you made a difference!

Due to Covid, a small family service will be led by Rev. Andres Rebane and a larger family gathering will take place at a later date. If so desired, donations to the Lions Gate Hospital Palliative/Hospice program would be appreciated.

I am honoured to have served as the pharmacist on his first inaugural LGH palliative care team. His vision, leadership and passion for his patients and palliative care was undiminished throughout. Sincere condolences to all the family. The stone he tossed into the pond, still ripples through us today! He will not be forgotten!

It was a privilege to work with Werner. He was a big part of a fine generation of doctors at LGH, and worked very hard to develop the Palliative Care Unit, a wonderful legacy. All the family should be proud and bereaved at the same time.

Heartfelt condolences to the family. You have lost a remarkable member.Knowing Werner since1966 I have experienced any moments and stories of his life and been privileged to enjoy the generosity of his family.I can say that finding his professional niche as a specialist in hematology he advocated new approaches to cancer care like palliative care units and hospice care on the north shore. He was a man of character with a reassuring calm manner and a principled approach to life. ..Farewell in your journey. We will remember you.

I had the very great privilege of working with Werner on the Palliative Care Unit at Lions Gate Hospital. He truly was a thoughtful and caring individual. He presented me with flowers on the maternity ward at LGH, following the birth of my first child. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

To Elizabeth, Michael and the rest of the family; I am so sorry for your loss. As a pharmacist at Lions Gate Hospital, I worked with Dr. Boldt in the palliative care program for about 15 years. I greatly respected him and learned much about palliative care from him. The program that he built is amazing and his legacy will carry on.

When my father was in palliative care at LGH, under the care of Dr. Klimo, Dr. Boldt came to see me. He looked me in the eye, put his hand on my shoulder and shared a profound and knowing silence with me. This simple act of kindness and courage was exactly what I needed to get through the mounting grief: it has never left my memory and served to guide my actions in times of crises. He was present. And that was all I needed. I thank Dr. Boldt and his family for their past and ongoing service to families on the North Shore. KH

As a nurse, I had many conversations with him. We talked about his family, not just about medical/patient issues.
I obviously knew he was brilliant as a doctor but primarily felt that he cared and could communicate with people on so many levels. Thank you, Dr Boldf

I had the privilege of working with him from the time I came to LGH in 1973 until he retired. He was a great leader and mentor and a fine gentleman! He will be remembered!
