Nick CHARUK Obituary

CHARUK, Nick - With great sadness, the family of the late Nick Charuk announce his passing at the Canora Gateway Lodge, Canora, SK, on May 6, 2024, at the age of 65 years. On December 11, 1958, Nick was born to Harry and Frances (nee Loshka) Charuk in Canora, SK. Nick was one of 5 siblings besides Larry, Sonia, Ken and Craig. Nick attended Badgerdale School for 2 years and then attended the Canora Special Education School. He always remembered Mrs. Pinkerton, one of his favorite teachers. Nick grew up on the family farm North of tiny with his parents and siblings. He enjoyed the farming atmosphere because there was always something happening. He always enjoyed wandering around the yard and barn observing what was happening from day to day. He was terrified of chickens and roosters, especially if they started following him around. This comes from a bad experience when he was chased by a rooster one summer and he never did get over the fear of chickens. In the fall of 1984, Nick along with his parents and youngest brother Craig moved off the farm to their new home in Canora. Nick and his parents had a daily routine of meeting up with friends or family for coffee at 2:30 every afternoon. Nick always carried his handwritten cards on which he would write down a joke or riddle that someone might have told him. Then whoever he would come across, he would tell them the joke. He would laugh every time he repeated the joke as if it was the first time he had heard it. His favorite saying, "lots of fun" was often heard, as he so enjoyed life. Besides coffee times, Nick and his parents joined the local bowling league that occupied the Canora Mall. Nick just enjoyed getting to go out and meet and talk to friends at these functions.Nick loved company; if he heard that someone was coming over to visit, he would be looking out the window from early morning until the company came. Then when the company came through the door, he was looking to see if they had brought him something. He especially liked getting a new cap. Some weekends, he would end up with three or four caps. Over the years, he probably accumulated over 1000 caps. Nick loved playing cards with his dad, who he referred to as his best friend. Nick's dad always took the time to play "Hola" with him. They would play 2 or 3 games a day just to kill some time before coffee hour. In January of 2019, Nick became a resident of the Canora Gateway Lodge. He took to his new home like a duck to water. He soon developed new friendships with workers at the lodge and continued telling his jokes to everyone that came around him. "Lots of fun," he'd say. Nick's health deteriorated quite quickly over the last few years. It is a sad situation when someone passes, but it is very difficult when an individual becomes helpless, frustrated, and unable to have any quality in their life. Nick has now joined his mom and dad and is in a safe and peaceful place. Nick was predeceased by his parents, Frances and Harry Charuk; as well as by his niece's daughter, Eva Graham. He is survived by his sister, Sonia (William); and brothers: Larry (Debra), Ken (Bev), and Craig (Becky); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their children. A Prayer Service was held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 10, 2024, from the Chapel of Leson's Funeral Home, Canora, SK, and the Funeral Service at 10:00 a.m., from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, Canora, SK, with Rev. Fr. Yurii Obukh officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery, Canora, SK. I remember Nick sitting up front at the gateway lodge. You would hit me up for a joke as soon as I walked in for my shift. The recreation staff was usually ready for him, but we had to get a book
Of jokes to keep up with himOf jokes to keep up with him. And you would laugh.
You had a pocket full of jokes that we gave him. Lots of good.
Memories from Nicky.
