MACDONALD
The children of Dr. Alastair David Macdonald, PhD, are deeply saddened to announce the death of their father, at the age of 82, on September 10, 2025. Alastair was the beloved father of Laurie, Ainslie (Tom), and Meghan. Alastair was much loved by his family, and is survived by three of his four siblings, John, Sheena (Phil), and Alison (Mike), his sisters-in-law, Heather and Michele, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was the proud grandfather of Téa (Nate), Joshua, and Alex. Alastair will be missed by his family, and close friends, including his companion, Bobbie, Ian (Paula), Nick, Jim (Mary Carol), John, Garth, Cindy, Kellie, and many others. Alastair was predeceased by his parents, Ian and Peggy, wives, Joan and Patricia, brother, Jim (Heather), as well as brothers-in-law, Allan and Greg (Michele).
Alastair completed his PhD (Biology) at McGill University and specialized in plant morphology. He loved teaching at Lakehead University and fostering student knowledge and interest in science. He ended a long career in academia as the Dean of Arts & Science at Lakehead University. When he retired, he was able to pursue his passions for travel, as well as reading about history, anthropology, and food. He was devoted to his family and friends and lived a rich and fulfilling life.
Alastair's immediate and extended family share their heartfelt appreciation for the exceptional care he received at St. Joseph's Hospital Hospice, and give special thanks to the team, including Theresa, Ryan, Jennifer, Holly, Victoria, Kathleen, Neal, and Sarah, Drs. A. Migay, P. Teixeira, and M. Bassuony, Dana, Mary, Chris, Trina, Suvi, and health care students. A special thank you goes to the clinical manager, Lisa.
Following Alastair's wishes, he has been cremated, and there will not be a funeral. Alastair can be remembered by contributing to Save the Children Canada, the Salvation Army, TV Ontario, or a
Charity of Your Choice.
