HANER
Our dear Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, Auntie, Sister and Friend Alice (Paterson) Haner passed away peacefully on November 24, 2025 at Hogarth Riverview Manor in Thunder Bay at the age of 98.
Alice was born on the family farm in, Devlin, Ontario on April 24, 1927. She was raised alongside her siblings on the farm until she made the choice to join the Canadian Forces with her sisters 1945, never to milk another cow again. Alice served in Manitoba, and upon her return home she married George Haner. Together they moved to Fort William (now Thunder Bay) and had four sons, Fred, Don, Wayne and Pat.
Alice and George travelled North America together and Alice fondly recalled trips to Jamaica and Banff. George and Alice established themselves on Garden Avenue in Thunder Bay, where they raised their four boys. After George's passing in 1974 Alice stayed on in their country home, providing for the family with a massive garden that fed the family year round. Alice moved into town in 1990, and she lived very happily on Victoria Avenue in her apartment. Her balcony was always filled with flowers, and her table with a jigsaw puzzle. She made wonderful friends, travelled far and wide with her sisters and hosted many large family dinners. She was always baking pies, making hundreds of cookies and the pot of coffee was always on.
In later years Alice received excellent care at Glacier Ridge and then Hogarth Riverview Manor. She was able to age in place on 4 Floor North Iris, and she loved receiving visitors, playing games with the rec therapy team and filling her room with family pictures.
Alice loved her family more than anything, and her adventures with her grandchildren will always be remembered. She loved taking everyone for lunches, shopping trips, park outings and picnics. We stayed warm with her home-knit sweaters, mittens and toques, and we all loved bringing our babies home for her to meet.
Alice was predeceased by her parents Fred and Emily Paterson, husband George, daughter-in-law Denise, sisters Betty, Dorothy, Edith, Sylvia and Joyce and brother Alex. She is survived by her sister Sadie, sons and daughters-in-law Fred and Grace, Don and Laura, Wayne and Brenda, Pat and Elizabeth, grandchildren Ron, Greg, Shannon, David, Amanda, Stacey, Andrea and Tom and their families.
Alice had a special relationship with all of her grandchildren and especially with her grandson Ron. She was always looking forward to his phone calls and his "Hi Grandma, what you doin?"
Special thanks to Dr. Ric Almond, who cared for Alice for decades and the doctors at Hogarth in the years that followed.
We appreciate all of the help from our cousin Susan Abbott, who came almost every week with goodies to tempt Alice's appetite. Susan helped her Auntie Alice to remember her sister Betty and her family. Susan would tell Alice stories and keep her spirits up. She was always happy to help with doctor visits, appointments and advice when needed. Only a phone call away, Susan would drop everything and come to Alice's aid.
Alice was taken care of by so many lovely people at Hogarth, but especially by Donna. She didn't just keep her room pristine; she was there with a smile, a warm hug or a shoulder to cry on. Her love and kindness for Alice was so special. She has become a wonderful friend not just to Alice, but also to Pat, Elizabeth and Susan.
Alice's life will be celebrated in the spring when the weather is sunny and warm just as mom would like. At her request, cremation will take place with Northwest Funeral Alternative, and she will be laid to rest alongside George at Mountain View Cemetery.
