Alice Neumann Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Alice (Alley) Neumann announces her passing on Friday, April 3rd, 2015 at home following a long and courageous fight against cancer. Alley was born a Cabbagetown kid on July 18th, 1958 in Toronto, and it was there that she brought her two wonderful daughters into the world. As a young mom, she took her eldest to Canada's Wonderland often, and she found peace horseback riding with her aunt who was like an older sister to her. Often, after a week of work, she would load the kids into the car and drive all night to visit her folks in New Brunswick singing at the top of her lungs to Phantom of the Opera the entire way. In 1984, her young family moved to her beloved Nova Scotia. She loved to walk the beach where she would find peaceful places to hide and listen to the surf against the shore. She found whatever work she could to make ends meet, years later listing her many occupations from tool and die maker to armoured car guard. She volunteered frequently for many organizations as helping others brought purpose and meaning to her life. In 1996 her neighbour's apartment was broken into. Having reported a prowler the night before, she was quick to accost the poor police officer as he attempted to list the items stolen. The neighbour, a young navy officer, was immediately taken by her vigour, and a brief romance led to an engagement, and a few months later she traded ocean surf for Lake Superior. They married in 1997 and moved to their beautiful home on Flatland Harbour on Lake Superior in 2003. In that time, her two daughters became young mothers and Alley took joy and pride in how they raised her grandchildren. In later years, Alley's happiness came from the quiet tranquility of their home and photographing the wildlife that shared the world around her. She loved long walks with her dogs and cat, and crazy family dinners that never went as planned. Alley had more than her share of challenges in life, however her spirit was strong and she was a fighter. Alley is survived by her mother and “Da”, Elley and Wayne of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, daughter Michelle (Joey) and grandson Tanner of St. Stephen, and daughter Cassandra and grandchildren Brady and Calista of Thunder Bay. Her husband Richard was with her at the end of her journey and finds comfort in the knowledge she has found another quiet and peaceful spot, hidden from the world but watching over those she loves. At Alley's request, cremation with a private family interment will take place at a later date. A celebration of her life will be held during her favorite time of the year, when spring turns to summer, at her home by the lake. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Neebing Fire and Rescue Association would be appreciated.
