Alice Saasto Obituary

JULY 1, 1927 – MAY 8, 2018

A strong, supporting limb has fallen from our family tree.
We keep hearing a voice that says, “Grieve not for me”.
Remember the best times, the laughter, the song.
The good life I lived while I was strong.
My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest,
remembering all, how I was truly blessed.

In her 90th year, Alice Mary Ensi Saasto passed away peacefully at Pinewood Court on May 8, 2018. We have lost a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt and a good friend.

Alice was born in Fort William on July 1, 1927 to John and Mary Pelto. After losing her parents at an early age she came to Nolalu to be raised by her grandparents. It was here that she met and married Paul Saasto in 1944. Together they joined Paul's brother Hans and opened Saasto's Men's Wear where Alice became an important part of the business as she did much of the tailoring.

Alice was blessed to have a circle of true and devoted friends whom she enjoyed curling, bowling, bridge, golfing, and crafts with, but her true passion was her garden at their camp at One Island Lake. She was a member of Canadian Daughter's, Aux of Suomi Koti, and a member of Hilldale Lutheran Church.

Alice is survived by her daughter Elaine (James) Podd and son John (Anne) Saasto; grandchildren, Alison (Terry) Lemieux, Christopher (Kris) Podd, Mark Saasto, and Charleen (Richard) Moorey; great grandson Declan Moorey; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years Paul Saasto, and parents John and Mary Pelto.

Funeral services for Alice will take place on Monday, May 14, 2018 beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Hilldale Lutheran Church, 321 Hilldale Road, officiated by Rev. Jari Lahtinen with a private interment at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Alice can be made to the Parkinson Association – Thunder Bay Chapter, or a charity of choice.

Alice was such a special woman in my life, like a second mother. Elaine was my dearest friend which meant I spent a lot of time with her family as a teenager, until I got married and moved from Thunder Bay. She was always so gracious and kind and had a very subtle way of giving advice - a woman you really looked up to. Memories I will always cherish. You will always be in our hearts!
