Andrew Balfour Obituary
Mr. Andrew Balfour, age 81 years, of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully at Roseview Manor on Saturday, June 11, 2005.Andrew was born in Sault Ste. Marie in 1924 and grew up there until 1935 when he moved to Fort William with his family when his father became the Arch Deacon at St. Paul's Anglican Church. While there he attended Isabella Public School and Fort William Collegiate Institute. He had served in both the Air Force and the Army during the later years of World War II after which he attended the University of Toronto studying Civil Engineering. Following graduation and his marriage to Jacqueline Phillips in June of 1950, he returned to Port Arthur to begin his employment with the C.D. Howe Company. Later in 1957, he moved to London, ON for a position with the M.M. Dillon Company and in 1962, he settled in Kitchener, ON for a position as Director of Buildings, retiring in 1989 after 27 years.The Balfours were very active in the Anglican Church as Board Members at St. John's Anglican Church and Charter Building Members of the Church of the Transfiguration in London, ON and St. George's Anglican Church in Kitchener, ON. Andrew was an avid sports fan who was passionate about the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Argonauts. He loved to travel especially to warm sunny beaches such as Hawaii, Mexico, California, Florida and Arizona. His love of architecture brought him to tour many cathedrals in both Great Brittan and other parts of Europe. Andrew's love of airplanes was another passion of his . One of the highlights of his life was seeing the 'Avro Aero' in flight. Andy was full of laughter and vitality who always had a mischievous grin and a twinkle in his eye.He will be lovingly remembered by Jackie, his wife of fifty five years; daughters: Liz (Frank Boehm) Andrea (Nick) Ward-Campbell; Grandchildren: Alexandra Vlcek, Andrew James Vlcek, Jazmyn Balfour; sisters: Peggy Balfour of Kitchener, ON. , Ruth (Richard) Heward of Rothesay, NB, and Katharine Hoskin-Hunt. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Andrew was predeceased by his parents The Venerable Archdeacon Charles Wilfred Balfour and Katharine Balfour (daughter of the Archbishop of Algoma and metropolitan of Ontario for the Anglican Church George Thorneloe); his mother and father-in-law Lillian and Alexander 'Lackey' Phillips; as well as his very beloved sister Joy Hoskin.Funeral Services for the late Mr. Andrew Balfour will be held on Thursday, June 16th at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by the Venerable Archdeacon Andrew Hoskin of St. Thomas Anglican Church. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the time of Service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Andrew's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay."
