ANJA SEPPALA Obituary


Anja Seppala passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at Hogarth Riverview Manor Orchid.

Anja Marita Seppala was born in Kullaa, Finland on October 27, 1942 to parents Enni (nee Salmi) and Matti Seppala. She was a younger sister to Jukka and older sister to Anneli. Later her mother remarried and two brothers followed, Kalevi and Timo.

She moved to Canada in 1968 settling in the Bay Street area. She met Mauri Seppala and they married in 1970. They bought a home in Intola and raised two daughters.

Anja worked in hospitality, real estate and as a home care worker, providing care to several people and finally retiring after many years.

Anja created meals from scratch and was a superb baker. She made pickles, jams, juices, piirakkas, pullas, pies, and numerous delicious pastries. Anja would take the family blueberry picking or any berry that she happened to pass by. She enjoyed sewing, making a lot of her daughters clothing during their childhood and their wedding dresses as well as clothes for her grandchildren. Many weekends were spent camping and fishing. Other hobbies included reading, gardening, belly dancing and giving tarot card readings.

She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Jukka, her sister Anneli, her dear friend Santo Pellegrino, and her former spouse Mauri.

Anja will be missed by her daughters Helena (Wade) Spencer and Pirjo (Randy) Niittynen; her grandchildren Corey (Samantha) Spencer, Emily Spencer, Seija (Ross) Tansey and Nicholas (Brooke) Niittynen; and Haley Greenwood. As well as her great-grandchildren Miia, Emma, Wyatt, Jasper and twins due to arrive in February. Anja is also survived by her brothers Kalevi (Soile) and Timo (Virva); nieces Maria, Lotty, Tiina and nephew Kimmo all in Finland.

The funeral services will take place at 11:00 AM at Hilldale Lutheran Church, 321 Hilldale Road, on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, presided over by Pastor Jari Lahtinen. A reception will follow.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the care team at Hogarth for the wonderful care given to our mom and grandma.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
