ANNA KUCH Obituary

In Loving Memory of
ANNA KUCH (nee Renz)
It is with deep sadness that the family of Anna Kuch would like to announce the passing of their beloved Mother, Sister, Aunt, and Oma. She passed peacefully on Saturday, October 4, 2025 surrounded by her Canadian and German family.

Born in the Black Forest in the small village of Pfalzgrafenweiler on December 7, 1929 to Master Painter and plasterer Gothilf Renz and mother Christine, her early years were spent in her mother's large market garden and helping her with the bees.

Anna's teen years were greatly affected by the harsh conditions of the Second World War. This was followed by her training in the art of tailoring which allowed her to create wedding gowns, beautiful knitted goods and high quality seamstress work for family and friends throughout her life, until eyesight and arthritis forced her to stop.

She was swept off her feet in her early twenties by Otto Kuch, a handsome and talented Master Cabinet Maker, who she married on May 30, 1953. In 1957 leaving the family home they built together she followed Otto to Fort William with baby Hans in arms and toddler Walter on a lead.

Willie arrived in 1958 and she raised the three boys, and tended a large vegetable garden edged with raspberry canes in the heart of West Fort while Otto worked out of town. It would be 17 years later before she would return to her beloved village in the Black Forest with her young family in tow. There would be many subsequent trips back to Germany to connect with her family and childhood friends, with her last trip occurring at the age of 88.

Anna and Otto had many close friends in the Thunder Bay German community and were active members of the local German Canadian Association. A fabulous cook she never missed a birthday or holiday and delighted in treating her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren to spazle with rouladen, Black Forest cake, Stollen and many other German specialties.

Following the passing of Otto she maintained the family home until the age of 95, when, with the support of her children, she moved to Chartwell's Arundel facility where she enjoyed the company of new friends and the many services of the residence. She relinquished her driver's licence at age 81 and would often rely on Grandson Nathan to drive her to medical appointments and shopping trips in her advanced years. These excursions would inevitably end at Boston Pizza for lunch or Tim's for coffee and doughnuts.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of 2C of the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital and the dedicated team on 4 North at St. Joseph's Hospital for their compassionate care during the last weeks of Mother's life.

Anna is survived by her sister Emilie Epple and family; sister-in-law Marriane Renz and family; brother-in-law Manfred Kagerhuber and family; son Walter (Jan), grandsons Nathan and Eric (Annie), great grandchildren Daphne and Lysann; son Hans (Maryjo), granddaughter Maryanne (Ryan Heppler), great grandchildren Cale and Grayson, grandson John (Ronabelle); son Willie and granddaughter Layne.

A private service will be held for the family followed by interment next to her husband Otto at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Anna and Otto were my neighbours for the 15 years I lived on our quiet little cul-de-sac. Anna and I often had long conversations over the small fence that separated our back yards. We both enjoyed being outside so rarely was there a nice day when we didn't have a chance to catch up. I often joked that she was in better shape than I was at half her age...she sure kept busy! She always made sure I had plenty of vegetables and sweet treats. She also enjoyed many conversations with my Dad when he visited. When I moved away, I made sure to visit Anna and give her a card showing how appreciative I was of our time together. I also wanted to make sure to include my new address in case she ever wanted to come for a visit. Rest well Anna. I will always be thankful for our time together.
