Antonio Mauro Obituary

Mr. Antonio “Tony” Mauro, age 89 years, passed away peacefully in St. Joseph's Hospice on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 with his family by his side.

Tony was born on August 4, 1927 in Grimaldi, Cosenza, Italy. In 1951 he came to Canada to make a better life for himself and his future family. He began working on West coast for the railway. Before leaving Italy, Tony asked his sweetheart Giulia Reda to be his wife. After four years apart, she joined him in the Lakehead and they were married on March 26, 1955, settling in Port Arthur. They made their family home on Bay Street, where they raised their two daughters.

Tony worked for Saskatchewan Wheat Pool 7, retiring at age 65 after 25 years of service. When at home his passion for wine making was something he was very proud of and everyone looked forward to sharing some of his vino. Vegetable gardening was so important to him and he was very particular about the way everything was taken care of. In the cooler months he would make preserves and cure meats for family and friends. For 10 years Tony and Giulia spent a few winter months in Acapulco. They would travel with cousins and friends from various places, meeting and relaxing in the warm weather.

Family was Tony's priority. He was their provider and support. He was very proud of his family's accomplishments. He loved his children and grandchildren dearly, his love of children was renewed with the birth of his great granddaughter Kyla.

Tony is survived by his loving wife, Giulia; daughters Susan (Peter) Prinselaar and Marilyn (Doug) Hindman; grandchildren Julia, Peter, Ashley, Kaitlyn and Meagan; great granddaughter Kyla; sisters in-law June Pagnotta and Hildegard Reda. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive here and in Italy.

Predeceased by his parents; brother and sister in-law Bruno and Maria, sister and brother-in-law, Teresa (Sisina) and Ernesto Gatto and brother Gaspare Pagnotta.
