ANTONIO VECCHIONE Obituary

ANTONIO VECCHIONE January 30, 1931 ~ February 9, 2026
It is with profound sadness that the family of Antonio Vecchione announces his passing at the age of 95, at home surrounded by his family, on Monday, February 9, 2026.

Antonio was born on January 30, 1931, in Visciano, Naples, Italy, to Giovanni Vecchione and Cristina Foglia. From them, Antonio learned the values that shaped him into an extraordinary man: hard work, loyalty, devotion to family, and unwavering love.

On November 13, 1955, he married the love of his life, Luisa Serino, and that was just the beginning of their love story, which lasted 69 years on this earth. They remained inseparable and devoted to one another until Luisa's passing in 2024. Their love for each other was stronger than anything imaginable.

After marriage, in pursuit of a life with greater opportunities, Antonio and Luisa bravely sailed across the Atlantic Ocean with only a single briefcase in hand. Upon disembarking in Halifax, Antonio waited with his wife in a crowded hallway seated upon wooden benches until finally called and processed through Pier 21 and allowed entry into Canada. From there, they continued by railway to Fort William, Ontario, where they built a life and raised their two children, John and Christina and later helped raise their beloved grandchildren, Michelle and Paula in a traditional Italian Catholic home filled with love and strong values.

During Antonio's first 3 years in Canada, he worked as a construction labourer before being hired at Paterson's Grain Elevators. There he began as a labourer and later took on the role of maintaining and oiling equipment. After approximately 15 years, the company was acquired by Richardson's, where he continued working for another 20 years, eventually retiring as a millwright helper. To further support his family, Antonio worked a second job in the evenings, carrying 100-pound bags of flour on his back while loading ships. He often worked from dusk until dawn, six to seven days a week but would humbly say this was only possible because he had the best wife who devoted herself fully to their home and children.

Antonio found great joy in tending to his garden. He grew onions, potatoes, peppers, and green beans but his pride and joy were his tomatoes. When not in the garden, he'd be picking plums off his tree in the backyard, making his own wine from grapes in his shed, jarring tomato sauce, and making sausages and soppressata. After a long day, as long as there were tomatoes, bread and wine on the table, it was a meal of champions.

Over the years, Antonio transformed in beautiful ways. While he was always loving, in his younger days, he was a strict and disciplined father and Nonno, believing deeply in hard work, respect, and responsibility. His children and grandchildren knew his serious side well. But with time, that seriousness softened. He grew lighter and more playful a jokester who loved to tease. In his later years, he was rarely seen without a giggle, poking fun at his son John, making jokes about sharing his wine or Sambuca, and his daughter Christina would join in on the fun during morning espresso. Antonio loved his son-in-law Shawn and daughter-in-law Pavlina, as if they were his own. But the forefront of Antonio's life was his grandchildren, Michelle and Paula, which he absolutely loved with all his might. That love was reciprocated tenfold as Antonio was the absolute best Nonno that Michelle and Paula could've ever asked for.

Antonio was truly one of a kind. Words cannot fully capture the love, respect, and honour his family felt for him as a husband, father, and Nonno. He was the embodiment of hard work and selflessness, loving his family with every part of his being. The Vecchione Sunday lunches will never be the same, but his family finds comfort in knowing that he and Luisa remain together and forever present in their hearts.

Antonio is survived by his children John Vecchione (Pavlina) and Christina Harris (Shawn); his grandchildren Michelle and Paula Vecchione; his sister-in-law Cristina Vecchione; his nephews John and Tony Vecchione; his niece Cristina Bakker (Raymond); his great nephew and niece Eric and Emily Bakker; his daughter in-law's mother Bozena Fridmanova; and extended family. Antonio was predeceased by his beloved wife, Luisa; parents Giovanni Vecchione and Cristina Foglia; and siblings Salvatore Vecchione and Carmina Vecchione.

Funeral Services for the late Mr. Antonio Vecchione will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 with family and friends gathering in St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 11:00am, celebrated by Father James Panikulam. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time in the Church. Entombment will follow in Our Lady of Charity Mausoleum at St. Andrew's Catholic Cemetery.
