Arthur Nordlund Obituary

Arthur John Nordlund, 74, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 5, 2018. Art was born on December 26, 1943 in Moosomin, Saskatchewan to Margaret (Trudgeon) and Alex Nordlund. After marrying his childhood sweetheart Diane Wagner, Art followed in his father's footsteps and was a millwright with Abitibi Paper Mill for over twenty-six years.
Following the closure of Abitibi in 1991, Art and Diane moved west to Vernon, British Columbia. They enjoyed the Okanagan's warmer weather and travelled extensively through British Columbia and Alberta. Years later, Art and Diane returned to the love and support of family and good friends in Thunder Bay bringing Art immense contentment. Arthur was an avid reader and was often seen with a cup of tea in one hand and book in the other. He spent countless happy hours looking at books at his public library. From a young age Art had an affinity for cars. He was a gifted mechanic and enjoyed building many street rods, including one of his favourites ‘Wimpy', a ‘27 Studebaker Roadster. If you ever needed to find Art, you just followed the country music to his garage where you would find a pair of legs would be sticking out from under a car. Art's greatest joy and pride was his family. He loved celebrating life with good food and the fellowship of family and friends. He loved deeply. Art Nordlund was a loyal, humble, and quiet man whose strong Christian faith and Finnish sisu gave him the strength to endure various illnesses. Arthur will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 53 years, Diane Nordlund of Thunder Bay; his children Eric Nordlund (Paula) of Thunder Bay, Marc Nordlund (Joanna) of Tsawwassen, British Columbia and Christine Nordlund-Grillo (Matthew) of Fort Fairfield, Maine; his sisters Beverley-Ann Wakefield (Craig) and Patti Lamminmaki (Terry); seven grandchildren Samantha, Matthew, Stephanie, Sabrina, Jonah, Fiammetta and Elias; nieces Maija and Amy and nephews Drew and Karri. Art is predeceased by his father Alex and mother Margaret. A remembrance of Arthur's life was held on Tuesday, October 9th, 2018 at Lakehead Baptist Church. We thank each of Art's friends who supported him, especially his childhood friends, Ted, Ken, and Allen Main. Heartfelt gratitude to all at Pioneer Ridge Long Term Care Home who treated Arthur with such care and dignity. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Helping Hands Auxiliary Pioneer Ridge Home for the Aged or Dorion Bible Camp.

My condolences to Diane and the Nordlund family. Art and I started our Millwright apprenticeships together at Abitibi Pulp and Paper on September 2nd 1964. Art was always a true gentleman, a hard worker and a good person to work with. It's hard to see such a good fellow pass on, but I will always remember him as a stand up guy.
