BANSKUMAR ARJUNE Obituary

Mr. Banskumar Arjune, age 74, resident of Thunder Bay, passed away after a brief illness on May 22, 2025. Bans was born January 28, 1951 in Port Mourant, Guyana. Bans left Guyana to attend Lakehead University in 1972. He worked construction before embarking on his career at the Regional Cancer Center as a medical physicist. Bans retired after 37 years of service in December 2021.

Bans lived fully and presently, enjoying the finer things in life - good company, simple living, pride in family and home, and embarking on journeys. He enjoyed curling at PACC, travelling, caring for plants, and socializing at his favourite hangouts. Bans created lifelong friends and honorary family wherever he went.

He is survived by his wife Cathy Baysarowich; Children Jason (Courtney), Jennifer, and Andrea; Grandchildren Alexandra, Ethan, and soon-to-arrive Baby Arjune; Sister Indra, honorary family member Steven, and numerous extended family in Thunder Bay, Toronto, New York, and beyond.

Cremation has taken place. Celebration of life to follow June 19, 5:00pm at Lot 88. Annual lean-to will be held in his honour.

Five years of high school in Guyana together. Bans was one of a handful of close friends. Unassuming and charming always. I actually got admitted to Lakehead University as he did but chose not to attend. He pursued training in the Medical field. I went a different route, becoming a NY Lawyer. We connected recently online and bounced around the idea of getting together in NYC. May God bless your soul. Rest in peace, my dear friend.

Dear Cathy and family - I was so sorry to hear of Bans' passing. I was at the cancer centre when Bans started working there in the 80s and what a delightful addition to our team he was. We had many good times and a lot of laughs over the years. After I moved away our contact was much less frequent but whenever I saw Bans, it was like nothing changed. His love of life and his relaxed approach to everything was so refreshing and never wavering. He was a lovely human to be around and I am sure he is sadly missed by all of you. He was one of a kind. My deepest condolences.

Cathy and Bans welcomed me as family when I first came to Thunder Bay many years ago. I enjoyed watching Jason, Jennifer and Andrea grow during the time I was living there. As children they gave me wise advice in the form of a magnet. " Thou shall not weigh more than thy refrigerator " I still have and I´m trying. Cathy Jason Andrea I´m so very sorry for your loss. Always had a great respect for Bans.

Bans and Cathy welcomed me warmly and treated me like family from when we first met. Loved watching Jason, Jennifer and Andrea grow up for the time I lived in Thunder Bay. They gave wise advice as children, framed in a magnet. Thou shall not weigh more than thy refrigerator. I still have it. So very sorry for your loss. Had a great respect for Bans. I´m sure Marion welcomed him with open arms.

Bans and I attended CHS around the same time and both graduated in 1969. I left the Corentyne area right after but did return to visit and would occasionally stop by CHS and hang out with the old gang (Bans included).

We both left Guyana in 1972 to further our careers and lost contact for a few decades but reconnected through Richard Mckenzie (now deceased) a few years ago. I still remember all of the stories we shared about the CHS days and how much we liked to fix things. Bans was extremely proud about an old truck that he nourished back to health and put back on the road.
I remember him as a quiet intellectual who could solve complex math problems back in high school. No wonder he became a Physicist.

I am grateful to have known Bans albeit for only a short time but he will remain part of my story. My condolences go out to his family, friends and loved ones.

Rest in Peace my friend.
