Barbara Patricia Sumner passed away peacefully at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, on Saturday, February 24, 2007 to join her husband Alan Thomas Sumner who left us on January 7, 2004. Born in Cobalt, Ontario on October 13, 1924, Barbara had a career in banking and later as editor of an in-house forestry publication. Married happily to Alan Thomas Sumner for 52 years, his mining career led them to live in Quebec, Atikokan, Manitouwadge and to Thunder Bay. Barbara enjoyed tennis, badminton, golf and horseback riding in her early life in Cobalt and Haileybury. She loved seeing new destinations and before her marriage loved to travel with her sister Ruth to many places including New York and Miami. With her husband Alan, they enjoyed trips to Portugal, Bermuda, England, as well as many destinations in both Canada and the United States. She loved to read extensively, garden, watch her favourite television programs and play bridge, cribbage and the word game Upper Words. Barbara is remembered as a down to earth, intelligent person who enjoyed a simple good life. She is greatly missed by her son Scott of Thunder Bay, daughter Sandra and her husband Peter and granddaughter Alisa of Toronto, sister Ruth and husband Des of Toronto, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Barbara was predeceased by her parents and her brother Fred. A graveside service will be held for Barbara Sumner on Thursday, March 1, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery, with Rev. Peter Smyth officiating with interment of cremains at this time. A reception to follow for family and friends at 3:30 p.m. in the Georgian Room, St. Joseph's Heritage, 63 Carrie Street.
