MALANYCH
BERNARD ERNEST MALANYCH passed away in his sleep the morning of January 1, 2026. He had been in good health since celebrating his 80th birthday in May 2025. He is survived by his son, Jason Malanych (partner M. Mars); sister, Shirley Malanych of Toronto, nieces, Leslyann Komljenovic and Jessalyn Leakey of Campbell River; and Bernard's longtime friend and partner, Joanne McMacken of Thunder Bay - they shared many of life's joys and hardships, culminating in Bernard's full-time caretaker role as Joanne progressed through a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Bernard is predeceased by his mother, Teeny Malanych; his former wife and Jason's mother, Anne Vibert; and his brother, Satch Malanych. Born in Fort William, Ontario, Bernie was a longtime resident of Thunder Bay, with short but significant residencies in Vancouver and Toronto in young adulthood. He attended local schools, including all three high schools, settling on Westgate. His summers were spent at Dease Park playing basketball, and winters playing organized hockey, Bernard's childhood best friend was Ralph Dahlin, and during adulthood, Brian Babichuk. Bernard graduated from Cambrian College with a diploma in Architectural Drafting. He was truly an artist at heart, and had many friends in many fields of interest. He was well known for his sign-painting and handyman services. He was a skilled cook and enthusiastic gardener, and was part of a long time supper club with friends. Long distance running became a pathway to further good health in middle age. Bernard's forever passion was stock car racing! He loved being in the pit-crew for many racing teams in Thunder Bay, and was on many teams that raced south of the border. Later in life, his favourite pastimes were lying on his couch watching NASCAR on Sunday afternoons, and walking his beloved dog Jiba with Joanne and her beloved dog Cohen. A Celebration of Life will be held in Thunder Bay, in Spring-Summer of 2026, when the weather is warmer. Donations can be made to: The Northern Reach Rescue Network, The Alzheimer's Society, the Canadian Association of the Deaf, and the Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf.
