Bill Duncan Obituary

(1960–2020)

“Well folks, if you are reading this it means I have passed on. Don't be sad or feel sorry for me; no more needles, chemo drugs, operations and most of all no more pain. I leave behind my wife and best friend Heather, son David (Ying) and my granddaughter Phoebe, daughter Alex (Mitchell) and Brutus the grand dog, brother Bob (Sue) and their children Jen (Collin) and Mike (Jessica). Also survived by mother-in-law Iris Calvert, sisters-in-law Netta (Gerry) Calvert-Shaw, Cathi (Henry) Siemieniuk, Leah (Jerry) Vanderwey and brother-in-law Boomer (Cheryl) Calvert and their families, cousins Sue (Dan) Chepil, Patty, Perry (Fran) and Uncle Laurie Clarke. Predeceased by Mom (Pat), Dad (Ken), Brother (Brian) and father-in-law (Dan Calvert).”

Bill was a passionate hockey coach and spent many years behind the bench coaching the Norwest Stars. He loved teaching and passing his love of the game onto future generations. Many players considered him a mentor and kept in contact with him for years afterward. Every year Bill looked forward to softball and golf with his friends in the summer. Bill loved to travel with his family, journeying across the globe, always looking forward to their next adventure.

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the many doctors and nurses who stood with us through the years. In particular, the good people at Princess Margaret Cancer Center in Toronto (with special thanks to Dr. Ezzat for his many years of care and innovation) and to our family doctor, Dr. Mulligan.

Bill wanted to thank all the friends he made through sports, work and school for making life eventful, and says he will see you all on the other side.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. If friends so desire, memorial donations can be made to Avenue II Community Program Services or a charity of your choice.

We are so very sorry to hear of Bill's passing. Our deepest condolences go out to you Heather, David and Alex. Our whole family have lots of great memories of the times we spent together. From playing ball together to coaching our children on the Murillo ball fields. The Mudhens was like a family and Bill played a major part in it. The picture is of the year we won the City Fastball Championship in 1990. There isn't another person I know that had a better memory for sports history than Bill. He will be sadly missed but we have to remember the good times and all of the fun we had together.

So sorry to hear of Bill's passing. Our kids had more hockey coaches over the years than I can count. Bill stood out as one of the best. Hockey coaches aren't supposed to yell, but somehow it worked for Bill. Our son played for him for two years and I'm sure he would agree it was the best two years of his hockey career. Maybe the two city championships helped, but it was mostly Bill's guidance and leadership. They say it takes a village to raise a child. I'm darn glad Billy Duncan was a part of our son's village. Godspeed, Bill.

My deepest condolences to the Duncan family. Billy and I went to school together from grade 1 to grade 13. No matter what school we attended, Billy was that comfort friend who as long as we were in a class together you never felt alone or out of place. He could always bring a smile to my face. I have the warmest and sweetest memories of growing up with him and the Rosslyn friends. To his wife and children you were truly blessed having him in your lives. To Bob, he's now safely in the arms of your Mom, Dad and Brian, he is no longer in pain and the world was a better place because of him.
My prayers are with you all.

I was lucky to have Bill coach my son, and as a referee observe Bill as a coach. For those of you who were not lucky to have him coach your kids, big loss. He will be dearly missed in so many communities.

So sorry to read of Billy's passing. So many wonderful memories growing up in the neighborhood together. All us kids always playing outside together as there were no computers back then. It was so nice reminiscing with him after mom passed. Billy was a great friend growing up and became a great brother, husband, father and grandfather. You will be missed by many but always remembered. RIP Bill!

Please accept my deepest condolences. I had worked with Billy for many years. He always had great stories to tell and had an awesome sense of humour. I know he will be greatly missed.

March 27, 2020

I was never able to recreate the "snap" sound he would make with his mouth.

March 27, 2020

Bill was my Uncle. Usually an Uncle/Nephew relationship is one where you perceive your uncle as an elder of sorts and there is a respect and distance there. While I held that viewpoint of Billy, he also was someone that was really easy to be around and felt more like a good friend that you could talk to and joke about anything and if you told him something or asked for some sort of advice you knew he wasn't going to go over your head and rat you out to your parents. He was truly a friend before an uncle/adult like presence while - again - he also held that role as well.

He was someone I looked up to, he was so good at everything he did and was sort of a computer nerd as well just like his son and I. He bridged the gap between being sort of the strong/silent type and leading by example while also being a lot of fun at the park in KB and on the road on baseball tourneys. I know Girvin and I will always have a good laugh when we think of talking with Billy at the baseball socialable in Sioux Lookout around '98.a bit of a computer nerd while also excelling at sports and being looked up to in that role as well.

I know I'm rambling a bit, but there are so many thoughts and memories of Bill that I will carry with me forever. Anyway, just wanted to say something. Get a few thoughts out. I didn't expect him to go that quickly but I'm glad he's at peace and I look forward to seeing him again some day.

Our deepest condolences.

Our son had the pleasure of having Billy as his hockey coach on Norwest. To this date our son tells everyone that Billy was his best coach ever! We don't have to tell anyone what a great coach he was ...a true legend! Always remembered who you were and who your kid was that he coached. Great man, very kind. The hockey world will miss you Billy. Rest In Peace.
