Brad Jones Obituary

Brad Kevan Jones, 67, passed away on Saturday March 10, 2018 at his home after a courageous and inspiring battle with cancer.

Born September 1, 1950 in Port Arthur, ON to Gerald and Marjorie Jones, Brad moved to Winnipeg in 1971, where he spent 20 years working for CKY Television in lighting, master control and as a news cameraperson. His second career was spent driving everything from buses to combines to semi-trucks until his retirement in 2010. Brad was a handyman extraordinaire and could fix or build seemingly anything. A jack of all trades and master of most of them, he loved carpentry, electrical, and working on all things mechanical for either himself or friends and family. He could often be found puttering in his garage, which he'd been cleaning and organizing since they moved into the new house in 1986...this task was made difficult by his other hobby of shopping for new tools and gadgets, so despite his (and Mom's) best efforts, more always came into the garage than went out.

Brad was friendly and outgoing and his "Hey, how we doing today?" greeting with a smile and a handshake was his trademark. He loved sports of all kinds, playing hockey and football as a kid and as an adult was an avid golfer, despite his son winning most of the time. He possessed a wealth of knowledge on a shocking array of topics from politics to history, cars, machines, sports and random stuff that was useful only to help Mom with her crossword. He was famously stubborn and usually right in conversations (especially with Mom) but he was kind, loving, generous and patient, and always willing to help or teach anyone.

Brad was predeceased by his Mother and Father and is survived by his wife Carol, son Mark (Doreen) and his granddaughter Taylor, who was, in his words, the best thing that ever happened to him. He is also survived by his brother Larry (Trudi), and sisters Barb (Boog), Nancy (Ron) and Kim (Donald) as well as nieces and nephews, Gillian, Taryn, Lisa, Whitney, Regan, Jeremy (Keri) and Chelsea. He will also be missed by his grand-dog Rusty, who was a great comfort and napping partner through Dad's illness.

His strength and courage was never more evident than during his battle with cancer. In his last year and a half, despite stage 4 cancer, surgeries and bi-weekly chemo treatments, he traveled frequently across North America to visit family and friends, golf, fish, soak up the sun and make the most of every day. The outpouring of support from family, friends and even random strangers helped him in his battle and kept him going through some tough times.

Special thanks to everyone at CancerCare Manitoba, particularly Dr. James Paul, Nubia, Ian Scott and the amazing chemotherapy team on the third floor for their care and support for him and for the family. Despite the situation, he looked forward to putting on his pink socks and seeing your friendly faces...you helped more than we can ever tell you.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation in his memory.

Viewing will be held Thursday March 15 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm and a celebration of Brad's life will be held Saturday March 17 at 10:00am, both at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.
