The family of Bruno Mauro is deeply saddened to announce his passing on Friday, September 6, 2013, with his family by his side. Bruno was born on June 1, 1922 in the town of Grimaldi, Italy. In 1949, seeking a better life, he travelled to Port Arthur, Ontario where he, along with many others from his hometown, established residency. Shortly before leaving Grimaldi, he had a chance encounter with a beautiful girl named Maria Alessandro. He discovered she was also soon travelling to Canada and he told her he would eventually see her in "Port Arturo". They did in fact meet again and three years later were married. Bruno and Maria had a daughter and a son, Dina and Michael, and were later blessed with five grandchildren. He was fiercely proud of his family. His adoration and pride knew no bounds. Bruno's happiest moments truly were spent in the presence of his children and grandchildren. Family was his life! Bruno was also a "social butterfly". He loved being around people and greeted everyone with a smile. Whether playing scopa or bocce ball, gardening or bowling, making wine or sausages, watching animal shows on television or his grandchildren playing in the yard, so many good memories were forged in the company of family and friends. Bruno was a lifetime member of the Italian Society of Port Arthur. His heritage was a source of pride which was obvious to all when he spoke about life in his Bella Italia. He worked as a grain doorman at the C.P.R. until his retirement in 1987. Bruno then cherished his time in the garden and always had around-the-house projects on the go. He was a jack-of-all trades, willing to lend a hand to anyone who asked. Bruno enjoyed good health until recent years and was able to live in his family home on Ambrose Street until the age of 90. When his health declined, he resided at Pioneer Ridge. Bruno is predeceased by his wife Maria, sister and brother-in-law, Teresa (Sisina) and Ernesto Gatto, brother Gaspare Pagnotta, brother-in-law/sister-in-law, Alfonso and Lily Alessandro, and sister-in-law/brother-in-law, Esterina and Carmine Anselmo. He is survived by his children, Dina (Tim) McFarlane and Michael (Susan) Mauro. Also surviving are his cherished grandchildren: Kathleen (Ryan) Hunter, Kristen and Sean McFarlane, and David and Amanda Mauro, brother Tony (Giulia) Mauro, sister-in-law June Pagnotta and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins both here and in Italy. Funeral services for the late Mr. Bruno Mauro will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Andrew's R.C. Church concelebrated by Father Antoni Fujarczuk and Msgr. Pat Stilla. Visitation will be held at St. Andrew's Church on Monday evening from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. with prayers at 7:00 p.m. Should friends so desire, donations can be made to the Cardiac Fund of TBRHSC or the Northern Cancer Fund. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma. We will miss you Dad, but you'll always be in our hearts.
