CALVIN GOODWIN Obituary

GOODWIN
Calvin Goodwin, aged 96, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026 at Hogarth Riverview Manor. He will be deeply missed by Susan, his wife and partner of 40 years, and lovingly remembered by children, Carl Goodwin and Diane Makela (Harold), and remembered by his children's mother, Mary. Calvin is survived by his grandchildren: Michael Makela (Catherine), and Amanda Makela; his sister, Jane Cuttress (Richard); niece, Marion Cuttress (Steven); and niece and nephew Jean and Lorne Goodwin (Rosemary). He will also be remembered by Susan's children, Sarah Gibbon (Jamie) and Andrew Gibbon (Gemma), and their children, Emma, Daniel, and Benjamin Miller, and Tilly Gibbon, as well as sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Paul Hough. Calvin was predeceased by his son, Paul; his mother, Marion McMahon (née Forester); his step-father, Lorne McMahon, and brother and sister-in-law Norman and Laura Goodwin.

Calvin was born February 12, 1929, in Fort William, to Marion (née Forester) and Raymond Ernest Goodwin. He spent his early years and early education in Pearson Township. Later, he moved to Dease Street where he attended Drew Street School and Fort William Collegiate. After graduating from Radio College of Canada in 1950, he held jobs in radio repair, electronics and retail. He eventually settled at Can Car/Bombardier in Thunder Bay and retired in 1994 after 29 years. Interestingly, he had previously worked at Can Car as a 16 year old near the end of World War II alongside his mother, Marion.

Calvin found great peace in the air and in the workshop. A lifelong enthusiast of remote-control aviation, he loved flying, building, and repairing RC planes. He was a dedicated long-time member of Lakehead Aeromodellers Club. His home workshop, filled with tools and materials, was his sanctuary. There, he could spend hours perfecting the smallest details, crafting each plane with an artist's eye and an engineer's precision. Those who knew him understood that his workshop wasn't just a place it was an expression of who he was.

Music was another strong influence in Calvin's life. His taste stretched from country ballads to classical pieces. He played multiple instruments piano, harmonica, and even a bit of saxophone and guitar never seeking applause, but simply playing for the love of sound and expression.

Calvin will be remembered for his dedication to his interests, and a strong attention to detail. He liked to share his hobbies and educate others about them. Calvin's legacy lives on in the memories he created, the planes he built, the music he played, and the lives he touched.

Memories of Calvin's life will be shared on Thursday, May 28, 2026, 1:00 pm at the Branch 5 Legion, 229 Van Norman Street. If friends so desire, contributions in Calvin's memory can be sent to Lakehead University to assist in supporting the Dementia Cafe program for dementia patients and their care partners or to the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra.
