It is with heavy hearts that we share with you the passing of Catherine (Cathy) Gwen Alex. Cathy was a beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister and most of all friend, and she will be missed by many. Cathy passed away the morning of Monday, January 5. Her cancer was no longer manageable and had taken too severe an impact on her health. Cathy was born in Regina, Saskatchewan but did most of her growing up in Guelph, Ontario. She studied Human Kinetics at University of Guelph, followed by graduate journalism degree at Carleton University. From there Cathy had a short stint as a translator with the federal government before beginning her long career with CBC Radio in 1988. With CBC Cathy played many roles - editor, producer, reporter, host and always journalist; and she worked in many stations including Toronto (for Morningside), Windsor, Cornerbrook (where she tried her hand at TV), Iqaluit and finally 25 years in Thunder Bay. Through her career at CBC, she met so many wonderful and interesting people and went on many incredible adventures, including flying with the Snowbirds! Cathy loved to tell stories, and her passion for life and adventure often made her the subject of those stories. As many have told us, Cathy lit up a room with her laughter and her presence. Cathy had many interests and was always active. She loved camping and canoeing; baking; singing; nature walks; reading and gardening. Perhaps her greatest passion of all was swimming, through which she made so many friends, and which she passed on to her daughters. Cathy was happiest doing laps with her masters club, practicing her butterfly in the lakes of Northwest Ontario, bodysurfing in the ocean, or just floating on a peaceful summer day at her parents' cottage. Cathy is survived by her husband Alisdair; her daughters Abby (Ben) and Rachael; her mother Gwen; her sisters Dawn and Lynne (Terry); mother-in-law Janette; and sister-in-law Christine (Peter). She was predeceased by her father Jack; and father-in-law Bill. Cathy will also be missed by her nieces and nephews Alex, Sarah, Shonagh, Sarah, Callum, Jackie, and Max. A service in memory of Cathy will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street. Those unable to attend the celebration in person may do so via livestream on the Sargent & Son Facebook page. Please wear your biggest and brightest earrings! In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Myeloma Canada, TBRHS Foundation-Northern Cancer Fund or a charity of your choice.
