CATHERINE BERUBE Obituary

CATHERINE "KITTY" BERUBE March 22, 1945 - November 17, 2025
Catherine "Kitty" Berube (née Jackson), age 80, of Thunder Bay, Ontario, passed away peacefully with family by her side on November 17, 2025. Born on March 22, 1945, Kitty was the third of four children of Isabel and Edward Jackson. In 1962, she married the love of her life, Joseph Berube (1935 2020). Together, they welcomed Jo-Ann, Edward (Janet), and Cheryl (Kevin) into their country home, and in the years that followed, opened their hearts to many foster children. As a family, they enjoyed travelling, fishing, and camping, and their home was always a warm and welcoming place for children, relatives, and animals alike.

Catherine earned her Social Services diploma from Confederation College and worked as a counsellor. She later joined Safeway, where she became Union President. Known for her leadership and compassion, she was a pillar of charity both at home and within her community. Kitty always found ways to give back whether through fundraising walks for leukemia, knitting and crocheting warm hats, blankets, and scarves, or volunteering at First Church United, Safeway events, and the Rainy River Legion.

Mom and dad purchased their beloved camp, Blue Acres, near Rainy River, Ontario, around the time their first grandchildren were born. During this period, they also adopted their daughter Katie (Rob). Catherine was a devoted grandmother to Alexis (Wes), Bailey (Tyler), Samantha (Matt), Veronica (Bryson), Zachary (Cassie), Joey, Emily (Aaron), Benjamin, Kierha (William), Christopher (Kaitlin), and Samantha. She was lovingly known as "GG" by her seventeen great-grandchildren.

Kitty cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren whether in Rainy River, at camp, or during after-school activities. She loved watching movies, singing, swimming, volunteering, cooking, mini-golfing, travelling, and taking road trips. A great believer in education, she taught countless practical skills, including sewing, knitting, cooking, driving, fishing, and camping, always encouraging kindness toward those less fortunate.

Kitty's love for dogs was boundless. Her home was always full of paws, and over the years she rescued dozens of dogs, helping each find a loving home. Catherine was generous and giving, patient and powerful, kooky and kind. She had a wonderful sense of humour and raised a family of equally goofy and spirited women.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the nursing and programs staff at Roseview for their outstanding care, compassion, and the many laughs they shared with Catherine. Catherine will be laid to rest with Joseph in the peaceful countryside of Burriss Cemetery, Township of La Vallee, in the summer of 2026. A celebration of life will be held on May 30, 2026.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your Mom. I remember her as a young Mom. I would on occasion bump into her at Safeways and she always remembered me. She was a wonderful lady.
I grew up next door to your Grandpa and Gramma Jackson.
