CHARLES MINTENKO Obituary

July 19, 1941 ~ January 11, 2026
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Charles John Mintenko on January 11th, 2026, "Sister's birthday" at St. Joseph's Hospital. Charlie was born on July 19, 1941 and was raised in Slate River Valley. He worked for Westmount Hogarth as a porter until his retirement 30 years ago. He was one of the founding members of the Oliver Paipoonge Volunteer Fire Department and he was an active member of St. Marks Anglican Church.

Charlie was never idle at home. He was a well known figure in the community, you could find him curling, golfing, disking, snowmobiling, at the racetrack -selling the merch at the CRT stand, or at the local hockey rinks supporting the Thunderwolves, North Stars, and the Walleye.

Charlie had a personality that no one would ever forget. If you met him once, you were friends for life. He lived his life to the absolute fullest. A true gentleman, kind, generous and would give you the shirt off his back.

He was very humble man who fiercely loved his family. Uncle Charlie never missed family time: suppers, football, racing, soccer, hockey, graduations, baseball - he was always there to cheer us on.

Missing out on his social life this last year was hard as Uncle Charlie battled cancer. We would like to thank all of his friends for the love and support that he felt every day. Thank you to Lakehead Nurse Practitioners Carolan and Stacey, the Cancer Centre, Bayshore especially Julius, 2C TBRHSC, 2South and 2North at St. Joseph's Hospital especially Noah for their care and compassion.

Survived by "sister" Charlene Reed. His nieces and nephew: Tracy, Michele, Greg and Rachel. Great niece and nephews: Christina and Jacob Dean, Drake and Kolby Reed. Uncle Donald MacGregor, Aunt Audrey Mintenko and many cousins. Predeceased by his parents; George and Christina (Gertie) Mintenko. Brother-in-law; Melven Reed.

Charlie had a shining golden heart just like the Werthers candy wrapper, which he would "sneakily" give to you from his pocket whenever you would see him. It is hard to forget someone who has given us so much to remember.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 18th at St. Mark's Anglican Church, 5 St. Mark's Street, Rosslyn, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 19th at St. Mark's Anglican Church at 1:00pm. Donations to Rural Cupboard would be greatly appreciated.

We love you Uncle Charlie!

Everyone loved Charlie!
He was as real gentleman and gave great hugs! He was always polite and interested in everything Slate River.
I remember he was part of the group of guys hanging out in our store, drinking Coca Cola and smoking their cigarettes! Also, the "garage gang" that used our big garage to work on the stock car. Too many have gone from that group.
I remember his old Studebaker pulling up to the pumps (back in the day) when I helped pump gas at Schan's Corner. You knew everybody by their car in those days!
In the later years, when I lived away from Thunder Bay, I would run into Charlie in various places when I was in town. If he didn't recognize me, then all I had to say was I was "one of the Schan girls" and that got me a big, Charlie hug!
A life well lived, Charlie.... Vaya Con Dios.

I had the great pleasure of working with Charles at Hogarth Westmount Hospital many moons ago. As his family so beautifully shared at the service, Charles was deeply caring, compassionate, and always committed to doing his very best. He had a naturally warm smile and a gentle presence that put residents, families, and staff immediately at ease.

One of my fondest memories of Charles is from a Christmas party when he volunteered to play Santa. He embraced the role wholeheartedly, delighting everyone with his animated antics and good-natured humour. It was moments like these that captured who Charles was - generous with his time, joyful in spirit, and always eager to bring a smile to others.

Charlene and family; our deepest sympathy on the death of Charlie. I´m sure it´s bittersweet, as he had a tough battle with cancer. Praying precious memories bring comfort. Ron (aka Rusty) remembers riding the school bus with you both to Selkirk and I remember you also through my Mom, Vera Tozer who worked at Westmount in the kitchen. We have lived in the Soo for 53 years so haven´t kept in touch. Take Care.

Rest In Peace Charlie. My fondest memory of Charlie was when I played hockey for the Slate River Seniors around 1975. A skate blade cut my arm and Charlie was on the bench as our trainer/assistant coach. He drove me to the hospital in his little truck to get stitches. Thank you very much, Charlie! You were a good man!
