CHARLES WRIGHT Obituary

Mr. Charles Thomas "Tom" Wright, age 80, a resident of Thunder Bay, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2024 at St. Joseph's Hospital, after a brief illness. Tom was born on April 28, 1944 in Port Arthur, Ontario. Upon completing high school, he joined Dunwoody Saul Smith & Co. to obtain his Chartered Accountant designation. After leaving Dunwoody in 1976, he spent 5 years in the retail sector before returning to public accounting with Thorne Riddell. Tom was hired by Thunder Bay Hydro in 1985 to head up the Finance Division, retiring as Vice President of Finance in 2007. In 1971, Tom married Brenda Bithrey, and they had two wonderful children, Craig and Kathryn. Tom joined the Army Reserves (Service Corps) in 1963, played the trombone (badly) with the Port Arthur City Band from 1964 to 1965, was the Treasurer of Saint John's Anglican Church from 1971 to 1972, and was elected to the Board of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, for which he served as Treasurer for three years. He became a Board member for the Thunder Bay Heart and Stroke Foundation, was a member and past Governor of the Port Arthur Moose Lodge (947) and St. Paul's Anglican Church. He was also a past President of Northwestern Ontario Chartered Accountants Association and served on the Audit Committee for the City of Thunder Bay. Tom enjoyed golfing at Thunder Bay Country Club and curling in the EZYDUZIT league at Fort William Curling Club. He spent many summers camping at Pass Lake Campground with his family and a few month-long trips to Arizona in the winter. Tom will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Brenda; son, Craig (Dawnelee) and the joys of his life, grandchildren Carter and Brynn; daughter, Kathryn; sisters-in-law, Shirley and Judy, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Cyril and Elsie Wright; brothers, Gordon and Bob; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Archie and Margaret Murray; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Reg and Susan Bithrey. Funeral services for Tom will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2024 at 11:00am at the Sargent and Son Funeral Chapel. Interment of ashes will follow at Riverside Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.

I knew Tom for many years in his capacity as the go to finance guy at TB Hydro. I agree with Larry Hebert. The world would be a better place with more Tom Wrights. I lost contact with Tom and was shocked to hear of his passing. Tom was one great guy. A pleasure to talk to and a pleasure to be around. I dealt with many, many finance guys over the years. But having known Tom in that capacity was a pleasure. My belated condolences to all concerned.

Not sure where my other memory contributions went, but happy to add again. I hired Tom at Thunder Bay Hydro. He was a good supervisor, well liked in our organization. He headed up the computer steering committee because some of his staff were being criticized by users that they were not flexible enough so at one meeting Tom received a lecturn with a steering wheel that would not move trying to show Tom wasn´t flexible. Many laughs over that one. Tom was a doer and a joiner whether at work or play or other activities. He loved family, work and his church. He enjoyed sports. The world would be better off if there were more Tom Wrights in it.
