CHARLIE GAUTHIER Obituary

EDWARD GAUTHIER October 6, 1949 ~ February 11, 2024
This is a photo of Charlie. Those who knew him, and there were many, would understand because he was notorious for not wanting his picture taken.

Popular Westfort mechanic and personality, Charlie will no longer be behind the counter of Airlane Automotive when his many customers and friends (because they were often both) come through the door. No more annual safety inspections, brake pad replacements, or exhaust jobs. But Airlane Automotive wasn't just a garage, it was a social hub for customers, friends, neighbours and dogs.

He didn't want to be in the ICU at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. In fact, he wanted Andrew, his long-time mechanic, to bring his truck, boots, and overalls, and take him back to the garage. This was not in the cards for Charlie despite the valiant efforts of the doctors and nurses in the ICU. His family is grateful for their care and compassion.

Charlie turned a lifelong passion for classic cars and racing cars into a successful business.

At the time of his passing, he was with his son Quentin and his family and friends. They held an impromptu wake at his garage to be with him in spirit and share stories of this sometimes-ornery proprietor who was so kind to so many people.

It was fitting that Charlie left the hospital in wheels he had maintained for the Everest Funeral Chapel fleet. Matt, from Everest, confided later that Charlie was resting amid the cars and not in the more traditional setting. His family applauded such an impressive understanding of their mechanic and friend.

Charlie: October 6, 1949 ~ February 11, 2024, is survived by his son, Quentin Charles (Connie) and grandson Elliott, his former wife Diane Gauthier (née Yacuk), six brothers and sisters, his special friend Bev Poystila, and many friends who loved him and will miss him.

Donations may be made to New Hope Dog Rescue or the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre in memory of Charlie.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James.

I just heard about the passing of Charlie. I am so sorry for his son and the rest of the family. I have known Charlie for I'm thinking almost 50 years. Way back from when he had his garage on Arthur Street. I was late to the driving scene... but Charlie was my go to guy for all of my 2nd hand vehicles until I was able to afford a brand new vehicle (which he also helped me pick by telling me the pros and cons of my choices). He of course was right. I love my present vehicle and it is serving me very well. Charlie and I definitely shared some "private" jokes about some of the people we knew. I loved the unexpected chats we had at the garage when I would pick up my vehicle at closing time or a bit later. He always waited for me to get there if there was something I needed him to explain to me. I loved how he rolled his eyes back when I didn't "get it" right away. Charlie was a one of a kind guy for sure. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Rest in Peace my friend.. Try not getting in to too much trouble now that you have been reunited with some of the old Westfort Crew.
