Daniel Gary Witol, P. Eng.1952- 2004It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Daniel Gary Witol, P. Eng. , in Calgary, Alberta on October 31, 2004. Dan was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on March 16, 1952. Dan met his love, Shirley, in Sudbury and they were married in 1997. Dan is lovingly remembered by his wife Shirley Anne; his step-daughter Tara Belcourt and his step-grandson Ethan Belcourt-Lowe (Vancouver, B.C. ); his brother Jim Witol and wife Pat (Toronto, Ontario); sister Judy Leeney and husband Peter (Mississauga, Ontario); nieces and nephews: Sarah, Eugene, Lesley, Bradley, Martin, Tim, Susan and Dan's grand-nephew Owen; his Aunt Margaret Bobyk and other family. He leaves behind a legacy of true and lifelong friendships, and a big Bouvier dog named Style. Dan was predeceased by his father Stephen Witol and mother Anne Bold, uncles and aunts: Fred, George, Alex, Annie, and Mary. Dan took great pride in his 30 years of experience and accomplishments in Engineering. He developed strong effective working relationships with Municipalities, Development Owners and Contractors in Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Kelowna, Nelson and Calgary. He was the Research Engineer in Wastewater for the City of Calgary and was particularly interested in the preservation of the Bow River. An academic, Dan was working towards his Masters of Engineering at the University of Calgary. He strived to better himself and the field in which he worked. In Thunder Bay, Dan received the Bachelor of (Civil) Engineering from Lakehead University, and the Diploma of Civil Technology from Confederation College. An unassuming man, Dan held the highest of ideals. Dan's quiet greatness touched everyone that knew him. He always took the higher road. Dan was a mentor to a great many young engineers. He believed in creating an atmosphere where people could grow, connect and be successful and he encouraged everyone to do their very best. Dan was a Member in good standing with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta; a long time Member and the current President of the City of Calgary Society of Professional Engineers; Associate Member of the American Society of Civil Engineer; and a Member in good standing with the International Erosion Control Association. Dan greatly enjoyed innovative theatre, music, and contemporary visual art. In Ontario he was a founding member of The Sudbury Fringe Theatre Festival. He also engaged in community involvement with the North Oliver Volunteer Fire Department, and as past Chair of Oliver Township Committee of Adjustment, and in Calgary as President of the Board of Riverwest Hillside Condominiums. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Rockyview General Hospital for their attention and care of Dan. At Dan's request, there will be no funeral service. Instead family, friends, colleagues and professional associates are invited to honour Dan's life at a "celebration of life" in the Dorothy Harvie Gardens Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo on Friday November 12 from 17:00 to 19:30.
