DARCY LeGROS Obituary

In Loving Memory of
DARCY DENNIS LeGROS
April 28, 1946 - August 25, 2024

It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we announce Darcy LeGros passed away on August 25th, 2024 at the Chilliwack General Hospital, with family by his side, at the age of 78 years. Darcy was born in Thunder Bay on April 28, 1946 to Joseph and Irene LeGros. He is survived by his wife Margie of 53 years, his son Kelly (Angie) LeGros, his siblings, Darlene (Bob) Haubrich, Carol Skukowski, Theresa Brindley, Gerry (Lynne) LeGros, and Robert (Rhonda) LeGros. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Darcy is also survived by a close knit group of childhood friends that he remained in contact with up until his passing, the "Thunder Bay boys" group. Darcy is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Irene LeGros, sister-in-laws, Cathy Tebbenham and Janet Stott, brother-in-laws, Jamie Ranta, Pat Greer, Marty Brindley and Joe Skukowski. Darcy attended Lakeview Highschool where he enjoyed his football days with the Lakeview Lions. He later went on to graduate from Lakehead University with a Bachelor of Education Degree. He embarked on a 36 year teaching career at Sacred Heart School in Sioux Lookout, ON. In addition to being a classroom teacher, he was a special education teacher for 10 years, a music teacher, and taught many students how to play the guitar. Darcy also sang and played guitar at Sacred Heart Church to share his love and dedication to the church and congregation. From an early age, he had countless interests and passions: fishing, photography, woodworking, astrology, reading, studying world history, cross country skiing, going for walks along the riverbanks of British Columbia and riding his bike. Darcy was a member of the Gentlemen of Harmony Barbershop group in Thunder Bay for a number of years, and more recently, a member of the Chilliwack Harmony Barbershop Chorus. Darcy's talent for singing and playing guitar came naturally and brought peace and joy to so many people over the years. His music truly was a reflection of his kind heart. Darcy found strength and comfort in his beliefs and devoted his life to his faith, his family, his friendships, and has made the world a better place. Darcy's kindness, caring nature and gentle demeanour were a testament to the love he carried for those around him. There was nothing that brought him greater happiness than the time he spent with his family and friends, and the people close to him. His legacy will live on in our hearts and his music will be remembered and cherished by all. A celebration of Darcy's life will be held in the spring in Thunder Bay. Date and time to be announced.

One of the nicest men I have known. Saw him sing at many assemblies at Lakeview High School in the mid 1960's. Decided that I would like to sing with him someday; soon. He had a kind and honest personality; so easy to get along with. Eventually, we formed a group of two, The Freemen. Our voices were similar and we were able to sing harmony parts that blended well. It was always a joy to sing with him over the seven years that we preformed . We also sang as a trio in the later years with Bev Pollock. The new group name was Bev and The Freemen. We sang at many of the local high school Hootenannies in the Port Arthur and Fort William area. Together we won a Port Arthur Summer in the Parks talent contest. Soon after that we made a reel to reel tape recording of a collection of some of our folk song collection, primarily Peter, Paul and Mary covers. This recording session was done at a one time take at the CBC affiliate radio station, CFPA. The recording technician was the owner, Ralph Parker. Soon after, Bev left the group and went off to attend a southern Ontario university. Her parents had relocated away from Thunder Bay to Sudbury. She returned to the Lakehead to perform in late summer to do a camio performance at Chippewa's, Sunday evening Summer in the Parks Series. We loved this opportunity to sing together to an appreciate audience.
Darcy was not just a competent guitarist and vocalist but a songwriter, too. Darcy and I sang a number of his original pieces. I especially liked performing The Thing, a comic song about the Tabor Light phenomena, that occurs near Esterhazy, Sask.
He was a huge fan of Pat Boon, a Christian popsinger of the Fifty and Sixties.
We preformed throughout up until 1974 at various venues; primarily at Lakehead University, the Last Spike Coffee House, Thunder Bay, to Terrace Bay, to Duluth's UMD and a farewell tour to Ottawa's Le Hibou and Montreal's Yellow Door Coffee house.

Hi Leslie and Judie,

Thank you so much for sharing your memories of my dad and for your kind words. My dad always loved his family from all the different branches on his family tree.

He really did share his heart through music which seems to be hereditary in the LeGros family.

Lots of love,
Kelly
