DAVID BACKUS Obituary

November 20, 1963 ~ December 27, 2023
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother, father and grandfather, David Backus.

David passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospital on December 27th, 2023, at the age of 60 after a brief but aggressive battle with cancer.

David grew up in Rosslyn Village with his father, mother and sisters. His family was most important to him. He loved his sons and grandchildren very much and was a voice of reason, comfort and support. He was dedicated to his mother, always calling or stopping by to visit or lend a helping hand.

David was a hardworking man who spent 43 years dedicated to his career as a Heavy Equipment Operator at the Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper Mill. He enjoyed spending time at his home in Neebing. His favourite place to be was among nature, often spending his free time outdoors working in his yard, mainly on mechanical and construction projects. His hobbies included hiking and quadding in the summer and snow shoeing and ski-dooing in the winter. He also enjoyed building model and radio-controlled airplanes and cars. David took pride in being a jack of all trades.

Many people looked up to David and followed the example he set in his attitude toward life. He left a big pair of boots to fill and is greatly missed by all of his family and friends. We will carry his memory with us in our hearts and know that he is at peace.

David is survived by his sons, Stuart and Brandon; his mother, Florence Backus; and sisters, Leona, Elaine, and Donna; as well as his nieces, nephew and grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his father, Leo Backus in December 1999 and his brother Alan Hilton.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will take place at a later date.

"We're here for a good time, not a long time." - D.B.

I grew up with your Dad and we hung around as kids. When I came back to town in the 80's, he took me to see Ghostbusters. He was a lot of fun, and always a gentleman. Sorry for your loss
