DAVID CHILDS Obituary

January 27, 1943 - July 13, 2025
David George Childs passed away peacefully at the hospital on Sunday, July 13, 2025, with family by his side.

David is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 61 years, Leona; his chosen daughter Julie; and his cherished grandchildren: Kelsey (Ian), Katie (Ryley), Kyleigh, Kamryn (Rhiley), and Keaton (Bella); along with five great-grandsons: Emmett, Gavin, Connor, Spencer, and Oliver. He also leaves behind his sister Judy (Maurice) Rubenick and their family Roberta and Wil; brother Donnie (Roberta) Childs and their family Jason (Mandy) and Donna and their families; sister-in-law Vivienne Loponen and her family Jessica (Rodrigo), Jackie, and Quenton (Liz) and their families; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Donald (Lap) and Leslie Loponen and their family Matti, Shawn, Kristi and their families. David's faithful furry companion, Cookie, will also miss him dearly.

David was born in Fort William, Ontario (now Thunder Bay) on January 27, 1943, David began his printing career with the Times Journal Newspaper, working with melting lead. He continued with Times Journal Commercial Printers until their closure in 1970. In June 1971, he joined the Brandon Sun, where he worked for 26 years until retiring when computers changed the printing trade. In retirement, he enjoyed puttering around the yard, shopping, visiting, and was especially proud of completing his G.E.D.

David was a long-time member of the Brandon Club, where he participated in bonspiels, shuffleboard, and fun golf tournaments. He was proud to be part of the shuffleboard team that won the Brandon Interclub League B-Side in both 1991 and 2005.

In the early 1970s, David and Leona joined the Monday Night Mixed 10-Pin Bowling League. Alongside friends Wendy and Vince, they defeated the Shilo team of Ken, Gloria, Mickey, and Grace to win the 1977-78 league championship.

David was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #3, where he enjoyed meat draws, "Chase the Ace," and good conversation. Never shy, David could start up a friendly chat with anyone.

He loved his trips to Las Vegas and, for many years, annual August long weekend getaways to Minot with friends Wendy and Vince for fun and games. A memorable trip to B.C. in a motorhome with friends Richard and Diane, and an all-expense-paid VIA Rail journey to Churchill (1982) - where he met people from across Canada and the U.S. were among his favorite travel memories. He also made yearly visits to Thunder Bay to see family and friends, a tradition he continued until just a few years ago.

David was predeceased by his parents George and Evelyn Childs; sister Pat; special Aunt Betty Childs; and his in-laws Ebba and Tauno Loponen.

As per David's wishes, no formal service will be held. Instead, please raise a glass of white rum and Diet Coke (and a smoke if needed) in his memory.

Donations in David's honour may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200 17th Street East, Brandon, MB R7A 7M6, or to a Charity of Your Choice.

Leona and Julie would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the paramedics, emergency room staff, Dr. M. El-Hadi, and the nurses and staff on the 3rd floor for their excellent care and compassion. Thank you also to Darrel of Spiritual Care for his comforting prayers, and to Kerri of Memories Chapel for her excellent guidance and compassion. You all made this journey easier than we ever expected.
