DAVID HOWARD Obituary

HOWARD
David Lawrence Howard passed away peacefully at the age of 77 with his daughter Raeghan at his side on Thursday, June 8, 2023. Dave will be so missed by the love of his life Laurie Sherrington; daughter (& princess) Raeghan Howard (David Bruce); grandsons Liam and Fin Judge; Joanne Bingham (niece/ akin to little sister); and longtime friend Terry Trusdale. He will also be missed by Laurie's family, nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues and his many friends. Dave now joins his parents Hilda and Norman Howard, sisters Betty Givens and Norma Bradley and brothers Ron and Bob Howard. Born and raised in Brantford, Dave lost his father at an early age. He was raised by his mother who proudly attended his university graduation. A graduate of the Masters of Psychology Programme at Lakehead University, Dave was held in high esteem by the many clients and colleagues he interacted with over the course of his career as a psychometrist, manager and counsellor at LPH, Sullivan Associates and Behavioural Sciences SJCG. His love for his career and his passion for mental health was unending as evident by those whose lives he touched. Those closest to Dave will know of his love for books (and his enormous collection of them!), his eclectic taste in, and love of, good music (also a huge collection!) His knowledge of trivia was endless and he would talk politics with anyone…even if you "leaned to the right!" He loved sporty cars. On a summer's evening, he and Laurie could be found in one, tooling around Boulevard after collecting a twin flavoured cone at Merla Mae. Nothing made him happier than sunning himself on a dock, patio or beach. Throughout his travels, whether camping with Terry or in the Caribbean or Europe with his girls, he was a committed sun-worshipper. We know in our hearts that he is now somewhere with his departed dog Penny in his lap, a good Psychology book close by, listening to some great tunes (probably a bit too loud), snacking on Hawkins Cheesies, debating politics with anyone within earshot (his hearing is likely better now). To all who stepped up during his recent health struggles, thank you. An informal celebration of his life will occur at Slovak Legion Solarium, 801 Atlantic Ave., July 4th, 2023 from 2-4 p.m. If friends so wish, consider a donation to Canadian Mental Health Association, or, simply think of Dave when you are outside enjoying the sunshine.

Dave was Best Man. at my wedding and always
a good friend. We lost touch over because of the mileage between us and for heath reasons but I will always remember him as friend fondly.

If you needed someone to listen to your woes, boost your self esteem, model courage in facing intractable health problems , provide encouragement, instruct you in weight lifting ettiquite or to translate Russian prose, Dave was your man. As a 35 year veteran of a monthly Men's Group, Dave's contributions were always insightful and supportive. His compassion for others evident. Our group has lost a valued member.

What a beautiful tribute to a man who clearly made the world a better place when he was in it. I know his daughter, Reaghan, she surely is a chip off the old block. RIP sir.

"Uncle Dave" was, and will always be, a source of inspiration to follow one's path with kindness and humour.

Dear Laurie, Raeghan, Liam and Fin. Losing a life long partner, a dad and grandfather is huge. It does not matter how much we know that someday we will have to say goodbye to those close to us - it tough to hold. So my condolences to each of you. Dave was an old friend (and you too Laurie) dating back to the l969. My very first canoe trip with with Dave and Laurie, in Kenora. Dave was a political teacher, a trusted comrade with a brilliant mind, with a great sense of humour served with compassion and love. Your opinion was always important to me. You were someone I could speak my truth to and always felt you understood and shared. When I would run into you and Lauri I would always feel such warm love and respect. I miss not having you in the world,

Bon voyage Dave. I knew Dave as a friend in the ' Men's Group' for many years. He will be missed. He always had a witty and informed opinion on life which I enjoyed. Laurie you are in my prayers as I know he was the center of your universe. Take care.

I will so miss this lovely, knowledgeable, warm-hearted man. He was a mentor to me at LPH and we kept in touch through a peer consultation group of counsellors for many years after. Dave liked to practice his Russian with me and, being Ukrainian, I could grasp much of it. He was a valued elder in our peer group, even after he retired and we loved hearing his wisdom and his stories (such a raconteur!).
Wishing peace and the comfort of good memories to his loved ones.
